This year, the Toronto Mixed Touring scene has converged. There will no longer be three disparate efforts, but one central push to produce a National calibre team able to see the podium at CUC. Players from Tundra, Big Hammers, and Monster will be merging in 2011.
In 2011, UNION will be joining the Ultimate Experience Mixed System as the National Level team and the premiere Toronto representative for mixed ultimate. Our goal is to be a perennial contender at Nationals by consolidating the mixed elite teams and creating a unified and lasting structure.
UNION's leadership core is comprised of captains from the top Toronto coed teams of the past three years (Big Hammers and Monster). We have brought our knowledge and experience together to create a team that will consistently be considered one of the best in the country.
We are looking for talented and experienced players who are passionate about competing at an elite level, pushing themselves to improve, and developing a tight-knit and cohesive team. We will be practicing once a week (Tuesday), along with refining our plays and strategies in TUC Wednesday League. We will also provide direct training and support to the rest of the teams in our system, which will include occasional support at Zen's Thursday practices.
We will be holding open tryouts, and plan on taking a 22-24 person roster.
Our proposed tournament schedule is as follows:
- TUF (Toronto): May 14-15
- Tushars Lovechild (Waterloo): May 21-22
- Mixed Easterns (Boston): June 4-5
- Regionals: July TBA
- Mixed Up (Ottawa) OR Motown Throwdown (Detroit): July 30-31
- Canadian Ultimate Championships (Ottawa): August 11-14
If you have any questions, please contact the captains (Dilhan Kuru, Michael Murphy, and Warren Tang) at union@playwithspirit.com.
ZEN was conceived in 2004, and since its inception has become a stepping stone for an abundance of touring players across all levels and divisions. 2006 saw Zen attend its first Nationals and ended up ranked 7th overall. 2007 & 2008 were great years as well, with Zen being one game away of attending the Canadian Ultimate Championship in both. We are looking to return to the National stage and 2011 will see Zen blend good competition, fun and improvement (both as a team and individually) into one.
The ideal Zen player will be someone who works hard on the field in games and in practice; and then goes out to be the life of the party. We are looking to consistently put out solid performances and constantly improve our results at major tournaments.
This year Norm Lew and Natalie Wong will be returning as captains looking to improve on the success of 2010. Norm and Nat are looking forward to a great year with the 2011 edition of Zen.

MARS MEET VENUS (MMV) was founded in 2003. MMV is focused on introducing players to touring, as an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in a friendly and fun setting. Over the years, many players have successfully moved up the ranks to play at higher levels in the open, womens, and masters divisions as well as within mixed.
In 2010, MMV attended a mind-blowing 9 tournaments, including one where they fielded 2 full teams. Over 50 different people attended practices and tournaments. This year, MMV will have a partially set tournament roster, to encourage greater commitment and cohesion on the field at tournaments. Meanwhile, MMV practices will remain open to all, and players will have a chance to earn a spot on the tournament roster over the course of the season.
Yorgos Stamatopoulos will be the captain of MMV for 2011. He has been touring every summer since 2006 with MMV and ROY, attending Nationals with Roy in 2007 and 2010. Along with guest coaches over the course of the summer, the goal will be to help players to build a solid foundation of skills and reach their goals as ultimate players. And remember, MMV always wins the party!
