Afrika Bambaataa is a DJ and community leader from the South Bronx, who was instrumental in the early development of hip hop throughout the 1970s. Like many of the early pioneers in Hip-Hop, he is of West Indian descent. On September 27, 2007, he was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Afrika Bambaataa was an important rap-music pioneer who, much like Grandmaster Flash, became a forgotten elder statesman as rap evolved. Bambaataa, who took his name (which means "affectionate leader") from a movie about Zulu warriors, quit the notorious Black Spades street gang in the mid-'70s and formed Zulu Nation, a music-oriented "youth organization." Among the members who became minor rap luminaries were DJs Red Alert, Jazzy Jay, and Whiz Kid, as well as Afrika Islam, who went on to work with Ice-T.
Bambaataa became a popular DJ on the nascent South Bronx rap scene, where his encyclopedic knowledge of funk grooves earned him the nickname "Master of Records." He formed two rap crews: the Jazzy 5 (with MCs Ice, Mr. Freeze, Master D.E.E., and AJ Les) and Soulsonic Force (Mr. Biggs [Ellis Williams], Pow Wow [Robert Darrell Allen], and Emcee G.L.O.B.E. [John B. Miller]). Each made its debut 12-inch single in 1980: Jazzy 5's "Jazzy Sensation" and Soulsonic Force's "Zulu Nation Throwdown," both classic proto-hip-hop party anthems, with round-robin rapping backed by live bands playing slinky funk vamps.
God Made Me Funky (GMMF) is the Funky live ensemble, out of Toronto, Ontario, comprised of a diverse array of musicians ranging from classically trained Jazz artists to street schooled Hip-Hop & R&B vocalists, all of which share the common bond of moving crowds and bringing the Nu Funk in to the next millennium. Consisting of Vocalists - Kaybe (Snow, Just Cool) and Lynzie Kent, Rapper - PHATT al (Len, Raggadeath), Keys - Danny Argyle, Bass - Cam Dougall (Graph Nobel, King Latifah), Guitar - Rich Grossman (Jimmy's Groove), Trumpet - Benji Perosin (Directions), Sax - Arthur Kerekes (Monkey), & Drums - Alan Witz (Funky Hi-Life, Millhouse); GMMF has been widely recognized in the Toronto music scene for thier highly energetic and outstanding ORIGINAL music and live remixes of Funk, Soul, R&B, and Hip-Hop classics.
As the band continues to tour and build its ever growing base of Funkoknots GMMF continues the trend of the forward thinking funksters that funked the world before them.
He has remixed pop stars and he has performed around the globe. He is known as 'The people's DJ' and one of the fastest beatmatchers live on decks amongst Canadians. He is an Electronic Music kitchen sink that has become a trailblazing influence on the floors, the streets, in people's cars and homes. His live shows are simply dazzling. The DJ known only as Jelo is a leader in North America's electronic music movement and an innovator and ambassador to all things hard and funky in Canada. Since his days supplying the heartbeat of Toronto's dancefloors in Eastern Bloc records to the most obscure clubs in the cozy corners of his Country one thing has become obvious - Experiencing these awe-inspired and interactive sets, regarded legendary by many, is what makes the Jelo experience different than that found with the average DJ.
Always maintaining the underground cool and respect of his peers Jelo refuses to compromise his musical principles. He exudes the authenticity of someone truly involved in a rhythmical love affair with music. Jelo's knowledge of artists and record labels is surpassed only by his natural drive to spread the joy these sounds has brought him. Always learning and always improving, the future for Jelo is guided by an awesome natural intensity, an astonishing musical dedication and a drive to change the world- one beat at a time.
