next up is a trip to Fla...
USAU September 5th Rankings now posted
http://www.usaultimate.org/competition/ ... kings.aspx

After the results of Philly Southpaw's performance at Labour Day, going 0-6, they have now dropped out of the top 16 in rankings, while New York's PoNY has moved up to #16. Northeast Region now with 2 wild cards, so three bids in total. One for Boston's #1 Ironside, one for GOAT and one for PoNY. Before, with only one wild card available, it meant either Toronto or New York would miss out. Not official until this afternoon and all teams concerned have had a chance to review.
Though Capitals are not included in the Women's rankings, because they haven't played any games yet, (something to do with being Team Canada, wink wink), they are favourites to take one of the two Northeast bids in Boston. Canada's other women's team Traffic did well at Labour Day and moved up to 6th in the rankings and look good to secure of the three bids out of the strong Northwest.

Saturday Recap:
Only the top two teams from each Pool advance to the semis with a chance to win it all!
Pool B
B4 Doublewide upset B1 Revolver going 3-0 on the day, though they still have two tough games left to play. Up first is B2 Chain. Next is B3 Rhino in the final pool play game that will be LIVE streamed at 2:30p EDT today. Revolver, Chain and Rhino all went 2-1 on Day One, so the two semi spots are up for grabs. The DW/Rhino streamed game, being the very last for Pool B, should have a lot on the line, the winner likely advancing to semis, but who knows. All four teams have a shot. Portland's Rhino has the toughest road with their other game against Revolver.
Pool A
A4, Sockeye, the other 4th seed, also went undefeated at 4-0. A1 Johnny Bravo at 3-1 only lost to the Fish. A5 Furious has the same record as A2 Machine at 2-2, but lost one of their games to the Chicago team. A3 Ring upset Machine 13-8, but lost on universe to both A6 Boost and A7 Madcow. Going 1-3 they also lost to Bravo, and still have to play Seattle and Vancouver. Bravo and Machine have yet to play each other and Furious and Sockeye's game should be epic another battle between the international neighbours!
This pool has one more team, so they play one more round robin game, but their games are only to 13. Pool A games are to 15.

SUNDAY Recap
09/02 2:30AM EDT- Rhino vs Doublewide- Open, Pool Play. * DW 3-0 upsetting Revolver on Saturday. Rhino hands Doublewide their 1st loss in a DGP game, but Austin still maintained first in Pool B

09/02 06:00PM EDT - TBA Open, Semifinal * In Pool A Sockeye went 4-0 Saturday, Bravo 3-1. Furious and Machine 2-2. One Monkey loss to Machine. DW undefeated in Pool B at 3-0 while Revolver, Chain, and Rhino finish the day 2-1.
NGN says probably Bravo vs. Doublewide, and they were right.
Bravo got out front early with 3 breaks to go up 6-2, but DW got a couple back before half as the momentum started to shift, but still down 6-8. Receiving, Austin scored to close the gap to one, then broke to tie at 8s. Bravo maintained their composure though, scoring, then breaking themselves to regain their two point advantage. A couple of points later DW got one more break to knot the score at 11 and put the match back on serve. The glorious comeback was not to be, as they traded points to a capped finish, 15-14 Johnny Bravo.

09/02 07:45PM EDT- TBA Open, Final. * Sockeye and Doublewide look good to make semis, but who will the other two teams be?
Revolver lost on DGP to Sockeye after an awesome battle between the common foes and we watched Bravo win over DW in another DGP finish.
Colorado's Johnny Bravo vs. Seattle Sockeye for the Labour Day Championship! Seattle looked calm and collected and got out to a quick lead 3-0. A Bravo time out got one break back, but by half the Fish were up 8-4. The two teams maintained the four point difference until the end of the game, each team getting one more break, the final score 15-11 for Seattle Sockeye!

Means Sockeye will move up in the rankings and since Furious was decent, the Northwest will keep their three bids. On the east coast though... poor Southpaw, the AUDL Spinners in another life, went 0-6 including a loss on DGP to #22 Madcow. Means they will sink in the ranking from #14 to probably out of the top 16 according to Ultiworld. That would translate into the MidAtlantic region losing one of their bids and probably the Northeast, (GOAT's region) gaining one if PoNY gets promoted from #17. Raleigh's Ring of Fire did not live up to their ranking either and will also likely drop down, but stay in the top 16.
GOAT may then end up ranked 9 and Furious 10 or 11. We'll have to wait and see next week when USAU posts the updated rankings.

The Women's Final was another hard fought battle between long time rivals. Opponents who've met in many different Finals games, San Fran's, soon to be legendary, Fury and their nemesis, Seattle Riot. Unfortunately, Fury has been coming out on top in most of their games over the last 5 years and this time the story continued, Fury 15-13 Riot.
Canada's Traffic out of Vancouver beat their seed and made the Semi Finals against Riot. They went 4-1 in Pool A play only losing to Fury 12-15. Seattle got their revenge against Traffic for the loss at ECC and spanked the Canucks 15-6, ouch! Still, they beat their seed and Phoenix, so they should move up in the rankings. The mighty Northwest will have at least 3 bids for Florida.
Fury beat Austin Texas' Showdown in the other semi 15-13, and like the Texas men, who almost made the Finals, they'll also likely move up the rankings

Links to USAU Open and Women's Aug. 29 Rankings found in the post below.

in other news
Club Series is up next with most Sectional games starting in two weeks.
GOAT and probably Ottawa's Phoenix will be among the teams going to Freedonia New York, west of Buffalo on Lake Erie for the men and Capitals, will be in Rochester for the women. They'll all be looking to qualify for Regionals which will be Oct. 6/7 in Boston.

USAU 2012 Grandmasters Championships
are taking place in Blaine Minnesota this weekend. No Canadian teams were entered.

Once upon a time in the forests of Santa Cruz…
2012 Labour Day Ultimate Championships
Link below for the LIVE coverage! This Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd.

The Labor Day Ultimate Championships has consistently been one of the most competitive Ultimate tournaments for the past 26 years. Teams from across North America have flocked to the fields in beautiful Santa Cruz, California to battle for the top spot at the club seasons last pre-series tournament. Labor Day has been pushing the quality of top level Ultimate every year with new ideas, new sponsors and has become one of the best events in the world.

This year is certainly no exception with 10 of the top 12 ranked USAU Open teams attending. Only Northeast teams Ironside of Boston, who will likely maintain their USAU #1 status no matter what happens in California this weekend and our own GOAT, who moved up the rankings from 16th to 10th after a strong showing at Chesapeake Invite last weekend, will be missing from the action. (See Chesapeake posts below for a link to a great video of the semi, GOAT vs. #5 Chain Lightening of Atlanta and recaps of all the action).

Recently crowned WFDF 2012 World Open Champions Revolver, (representing USA), has slipped to number three in the USAU rankings used to qualify teams for the upcoming Club Series and finally the 2012 USAU Ultimate Championships, October 25-28 in Sarasota Florida. Are they not keeping up to their USA competition or are they the sleeping bear, just waiting for their return to Florida, to pounce again and become 3 years in a row USAU Open Champions? This weekend's tournament will likely provide as many answers as questions after the 13 teams entered have finished the battle for the title and their opportunity to go to Sarasota in October as a #1 seed for their region or one of the 8 wild cards available.
Check out the possibilities here: http://skydmagazine.com/2012/08/wildcar ... ay-week-1/

USAU #2 Colorado's Johnny Bravo is a surprise of the season. Preforming above last year's level and going undefeated at the Colorado Cup and the U.S. Open beating Chain Lightening twice, Austin's Doublewide, GOAT and D.C.'s Truck Stop along the way. However they have yet to be tested by either powerhouse and the Finalists of the last two years in Sarasota, Ironside or Revolver. Chicago's Machine has also preformed well, winning their own Heavyweights tournament, last weekend, but with their only strong competition, Madison Club. At ECC Machine went 5-2 beating Furious George, GOAT, Dobulewide, PoNY and Seattle's other team Voodoo, and only losing to Ironside 11-15 and to Portland's Rhino on universe.

Joining number one seed of the tournament Johnny Bravo and World Champs Revolver will be USAU ranked #4 Portland's Rhino, after a very strong ECC showing, (and now well known for their Chasing Sarasota documentary), # 5 Chain Lightening, Atlanta, #6 Machine, Chicago, #7 Ring of Fire, Raleigh, #8 Seattle Sockeye, #9 Doublewide, Austin, #11 Furious George, Vancouver, (one behind #10 GOAT), #12 Madison Club, Madison Wisc., #14 Philadelphia's Southpaw (most of the team just finished winning the AUDL Championship as the Spinners. Check life as a pro vs. a club player here: http://ultiworld.com/wordpress/?p=1401 ), #18 Boost Mobile, Bay Area, (aka Stanford Club who were ranked 9th before Chesapeake), and #22 Colombus Ohio's Madcow, seeded for the tournament in that order.

On the Women's side, no Capitals, but Vancouver's USAU #7 ranked Traffic will be representing Canada! 2012 WFDF Women's Silver medalists and 6 times in a row USAU Champions Fury are always favourites along with Seattle's Riot, the two top women's teams in the last ten years, Ranked 1 and 2 by USAU and seeded 1 and 2 for the tournament. The strong Ultimate cities of San Francisco and Seattle will also each be sending a second team. USAU ranked #12 Nightlock from the Bay Area and #14 Seattle's Underground. Also in the heat of competition will be North Carolina's #5 Phoenix and #9 Colorado's Molly Brown. Not as strong a field as the men's but still it has all of the consistently strong Northwest teams including Portland's #15 Schwa. There will be 12 women's teams competing.

NGN LIVE STREAMING
Cost for one game LIVE + VOD $5, PACKAGE of all six $15

http://www.ngnultimate.com/schedule

Three games STREAMED LIVE each day.
Saturday the 1st
09/01 09:45AM PDT - Revolver vs Chain Lightning - Open, Pool Play. * Chain up 3 breaks early at 5-2 can't contain the Champs who roar back to take half 8-6 and the game 15-11. S.F.'s leader and standout player Bart Watson has retired.
09/01 01:15PM PDT - Johnny Bravo vs Sockeye - Open, Pool Play. * Bravo looked the better team early, but the Fish turned it up, played a strong 2nd half and scored the upset, 13-10.
09/01 04:45PM PDT - Riot vs Molly Brown - Women's, Pool Play. * Down early 1-3, Riot cruise to victory, 15-9.
SUNDAY the 2nd Games
09/02 11:30AM PDT - Rhino vs Doublewide - Open, Pool Play. * DW 3-0 upsetting Revolver. Brodie Smith coming off knee injury, not 100%. Rhino USAU #4. Should be a barn burner!
09/02 03:00PM PDT - TBA Open, Semifinal * In Pool A Sockeye went 4-0 Saturday and Johnny Bravo 3-1. Furious and Machine 2-2, but one Monkey loss was to Machine. DW was undefeated in Pool B at 3-0 while Revolver, Chain, and Rhino all finished the day 2-1. Pool A has 6 teams with games to 13 and Pool B has 5 with games to 15.
09/02 04:45PM PDT - TBA Open, Final. * Sockeye and Doublewide look good to make semis, but who will the other two teams be?

News Updates
GOAT and New York's PoNY may both be hoping to see Southpaw loose big to Madison in the early game Sunday. That result may drop Southpaw out of the top 16 ranked teams and PoNY up in to it, so the Northeast Region would get 3 bids instead of 2.
The tournament location is super scenic and there are wild deer grazing non-chalantly in the background as the teams battle on the nearby fields.

Chesapeake Invite

Great UltiWorld recap of Chesapeake Invite and GOAT's Finals game against #1 Ironside

http://ultiworld.com/wordpress/?p=1302

forecasts of bids and team stats included.

Notes:
Lightning delayed play around 45 minutes on Sunday…Thank you to Curley’s BBQ Truck for letting us charge our camera batteries…Chain Lightning’s offensive line had just one turnover through the first three halves of play on Sunday…Due to injury, GOAT had just 13 available players in the finals…Some Southpaw players, used to playing in the AUDL, forgot to start the stall count on Saturday morning…Many games were observed, thanks to Chesapeake’s USA Ultimate observer training clinic…

let the drama begin...

Chesapeake Invite
Semis and Finals
ROCK Stars!!! GOAT is rolling!

GOAT upsets Chain Lightening in the semi finals on universe to win 15-14. Pulling to Chain for the final point, Jeff Lindquist got a layout D at half field for the turn and GOAT took advantage and scored the final point to get the win! They were down 7-4 at half, then 9-4 and even down 11-7 later in the game. They broke 3 times to tie at 12's, trading to 15 before the final Linq D and the GOAT victory!

There was a lightening storm, so the tournament was delayed and the Finals were then started almost immediately after the semis to avoid another possible storm on the horizon. Not much rest for GOAT who had brought a limited bench to Poolesville. No Adrian Yearwood, Mark Lloyd or the now retired superstar John Hassell.

GOAT got their biggest foe, Ironside of Boston, who won their semi over Ring of Fire 13-7, in the Finals match-up. Boston got a bit more of a rest, winning their semi earlier then taking in the exciting finish to the GOAT vs. Chain game. Boston pulled and Toronto scored first. Then Boston got the first break on the third point of the game to take a 2-1 lead. GOAT soon got the break back for a 3-2 lead of their own to put things back on serve. They then traded to 5s, before Ironside finished the half breaking twice to lead 7-5.

The second half opened with the organic break by the sailors who then maintained their 3 point lead up to 10-7. Boston then got the first break of the 2nd half to go up by 4 points in a game to 13. GOAT held serve and got a break back to pull it to 11-9. On the following Ironside possession, Anatoly Vasilyev, (Toly) got a poach D, but that led to a heart breaking drop near Boston's goal line that caught, could've produced an 11-10 score. It was not to be and Boston now with the disc, held on, scored, pulled, turned and scored to take a final break and win 13-9.

In the end GOAT still had a very successful tournament. Coming in ranked 16th by USAU and seeded 6th for the tournament they had a steep hill to climb to qualify for Florida. Making semis would've put them in a good position to be eligible to qualify, but with their win over USAU 6th ranked Chain Lightening and looking pretty good against USAU 1st ranked Ironside, (who had a pretty full sqaud), playing with limited numbers and having a couple of key players missing, they now look very solid to be a wild card for Sarasota out of the North East.

Their other rival out of the Northeast is New York's PoNY who were ranked 15th by USAU and had been looking strong prior to this weekend. However PoNY did not do well in Chesapeake, losing to Stanford Club (Boost Mobile), 8-12 in quarters and twice to Santa Barbara's Condors, once in pool play 10-13 and once in a 9th place bracket game, 12-13, so they ended up tied for 11th with San Diego's Streetgang.

So from how I understand it, since Ironside is ranked #1 by USAU and GOAT did so well at this tournament, but PoNY did not, there may be only one wild card bid available for the NorthEast region. Ironside gets the automatic bid as the #1 team in the region and then there may only be one wild card available, that one courtesy of Toronto's strong showing at this sanctioned tournament. GOAT will have to make sure they beat PoNY at regionals to go to Florida as that wildcard.
(Please correct me if I got that wrong).

Quarters and Saturday's results and news in the post below...

Labour Day Ultimate Championships
This coming weekend will be the big west coast USAU sanctioned tournament with even more top club teams than Chesapeake vying for positions and seedings for Club Championships. #6 Chain, #10 Ring, Southpaw, Madcow and #9 Boost Mobile who were in Maryland this weekend will also be in California next weekend along with the USAU #2,Colorado's Johnny Bravo and USAU's #3, World Champions Revolver. Also visiting Santa Cruz will be Vancouver's #12 Furious George, looking for a good showing to guarantee 3 bids for the Northwest. Their Northwest rivals, #8 Sockeye and #4 Rhino will also be there along with #7 Doublewide of Texas and a new stronger #5 Machine from Chicago. Madison Club will round out the 11 team tournament. They lost in the finals this weekend at Heavyweights to Machine, 15-10 after a close first half that saw Machine break for the last point to lead at the break 7-6. Madcow, Madison and Southpaw all need to play a minimum 5 sanctioned games to get ranked by USAU.

LabourDay will be another NexGen live event.

Chesapeake Invite
GOAT
goes 3-1 Saturday at this weekend's Chesapeake Invite , one of the tournaments used to qualify teams for USAU in Florida later this year. Currently ranked #16 in Open Club by USAU, this tournament is a make or break it for GOAT if they want to qualify for the end of year USAU Championships.
USAU rankings: http://www.usaultimate.org/news/club-ra ... g-22-2012/
With a new qualifying format this year, teams can make it to Sarasota by being the #1 team in one of the, now 8 regions, (been 6 for a while). The other 8 teams will qualify based on their records from designated qualifying events. Chesapeake is one of those events. Since they've made quarters without having to win a back-door-play-in-game, it looks good to move up the rankings and be one of the teams that makes the trip south for Halloween.
Saturday they beat Oakland Hators of Pittsburg, 13-10, Streetgang from San Diego, 13-7 and lost to North Carolina's Ring of Fire 8-13. The last games of the day were crossovers, so GOAT, 2nd in their pool, got SouthPaw, the winner of Pool D. The Philadelphia team has been playing as the Spinners in the AUDL. They don't have a record against any of the other club teams since they've been playing AUDL, winning the Championship a couple of weeks ago. GOAT won the game easy 13-7. They lost to the lefties in the quarter final bracket last year in Florida in a very close hard fought game on universe 15-16.
Their first Sunday game will be against Colombus Ohio's Madcow, who also beat Streetgang, but only 11-9, in the play-in-game earlier in the day. Beat Madcow and they get Atlanta's powerhouse Chain Lightening in the semis and most probably, a birth to Fla.
The Bay Area's "other" team, Boost Mobile is looking good, but get #1 Boston's Ironside in the quarters.

Open Final USA 15 Colombia 10
Great game with lots of breaks in runs.
USA up early 5-1 saw Colombia bring it back to 5-4, but then go down 9-6 at half. Receiving to start the 2nd, Colombia scored and then broke twice to tie the game at 9's. USA got it back in order a bit and led 12-10 before breaking 3 final times to win under soft cap 15-10.
Women Final USA 10 vs. Colombia 14 - Colombian Gold Wink
Colombia had three star performers from their 2012 WUGC Ladies team leading them against the undefeated Americans. Laura Ospina, Eliana Perez and Alejandra Uribe led the potent Colombian offence! Colombia also has a set of 13 year old twins playing for them, Maria Manuela and Maria Valeria Cardenas, one of them who plays on the D line and pulls. Watch for both of them in the future. (they can play 5 more years in U19s, yikes!)
Last year when Canada lost to the Colombians in the Final it was considered a bit of an upset. This year they deserved everything they got, using Ospina and Perez to guide their patient offence with a total arsenal of all the throws. Some sloppy tired play near the end, but lots of excellent Ds throughout the game by both teams as well. Lots of ho!
Canada won Bronze in both Open and Women, both against Germany. Our Open boys lost to USA in semis 8-11 and our ladies lost to the defending Champions, Colombia 8-12 in their semi final on Friday.

Player Stats here: http://www.cuc2012.ca/teams/

Mixed
#7 Union went undefeated Friday in Power Pools and advance into the Quarter Finals Saturday, looking good for a medal, which may be a Gold. Their quarters game goes 10:15a PDT, so 1:15p here.
Montreal's #3 Odyssee and #2 UNight, Vancouver's 7 Deadly Sins seeded #1 and local heroes, #8 Skysharks, (Victoria's 2nd best chance at a medal, Nomads challenging for Masters Gold), are all also looking good to compete for the Gold! UNight and Deadly Sins get each other in one quarter and the winner will advance to likely play Odyssee in one semi. On the other side, Union, (if they win over their lower seed in quarters), will play the winner of Guelph's #4 MuD and the Skysharks in the 2nd semi final.
After two days of play Malissa Lundgren leads Union in scoring with 16 assists and 19 points and super duper Kate Jardine leads in goals with 15.

Open
Some team named Furious George (#1 seed) is still undefeated. The other top quarterfinalists are also from Vancouver, #5 Ritchie and Friends and #7 Blackfish. Winnipeg's #3 General Strike, being led by their hometown hero, Mark Lloyd, is the lone team not from the west coast city, who look good to contend for the medals.
#2 Grand Trunk lost to their Ontario neighbours, Maverick in power pools and get the unfortunate position of playing Furious in quarters. Montreal's #6 Mephisto and #9 Calgary's The Ghosts had an epic battle Friday, trading the lead back and forth more than once, The Ghosts scoring the last 3 points to take the win 16-14 after leading early, but being down late, 13-14.
#8 Too Bad and #10 ROY are in the Placement bracket, with Too Bad now the favourite to finish in 9th overall. Mr. Gregory Lang leading the team with 16 assists after two days of competition. ROY lost to their nemesis, Ottawa's #12 Firebird 8-15 in power pools.

Women
#1 Traffic, the division favourite's, have been cruising, the most points they've conceded, seven against, by Lotus and Vancouver's Zephyr. The top two seeds from each power pool advance to quarters, with the next eight teams battling through play-in-games to make quarters. Lotus was one of those teams and they defeated Kelowna BC's Bushfire late Friday to advance to their quarter match up against their Ottawa sisters, Stella.

Juniors Open
#6 Overdrive are through to semis and play the strong #4 MOFO of Winnipeg who beat #1 seed Vancouver's BC Blaze, 12-5 on Friday. The other semi has the Blaze against a strong Quebec team, #3 Hydro.

Junior Women
This small 8 team division is playing a 7 team round robin, so one more game Saturday morning before quarters are set. #2 Overdrive ladies are looking good to make semis and finals. Their only loss to #1 seed BC Blaze, so hopefully a rematch in Finals. Westview's own Cindy Truong leads the girls in scoring with 10 assists and 21 points. Bailee Davis (from Barrie?) leads in assists with 14 and she's also scored one goal.

Update on all the action that's been going down recently.

2012 Canadian Ultimate Championships started August 16 and Toronto will be represented on our west coast and in the city of Victoria for the next four days by seven local teams. http://www.cuc2012.ca/
Toronto Teams attending.
Mixed
Union
https://canadianultimate.com/index.php/ ... 3?start=40
Day 1, Pool B. Union, seeded only 7th going in, after being upset in the playoff round at Ontario Provincials, went 3-0 Thursday "upsetting" #2 seed UNight of Montreal 13-12 to move into one of two power pools as a top seed. They are joined by fellow Ontarians, #4 seed MuD from Guelph, who also went undefeated in their pool Thursday. MuD won the Ontario Championships and will play Union on Friday.
Open
Grand Trunk
Roy https://canadianultimate.com/index.php/ ... 3?start=57
Too Bad https://canadianultimate.com/index.php/ ... 3?start=60
In a 16 team division the B.C. teams are looking strong. #2 seed Grand Trunk lost in pool play to #7, Vancouver's Black Fish, 12-14 to go 2-1 on the day and moved onto power pools for Friday. ROY, in the same group, went 1-2 and also advances from the pool. Too Bad in a pool with Furious, (15-4 L) were also beaten by Calgary's The Ghosts 5-15 in the 8/9 game, but also advance as a 1-2 team. All teams that finished 4th in pool play have been relegated to a placement pool. All other teams carry their pool play records into the power pools and play 3 games Friday against 3 teams from an opposite Thursday pool. In Pool D, #5 Richie and Friends, also of Vancouver, upset Waterloos' #4 Maverick 13-9. That means 3 of the 4 teams to go undefeated in the Thursday pools are all from Vancouver, Winnipeg's General Strike is the 4th.
Women
Lotus https://canadianultimate.com/index.php/ ... 3?start=64
Got burned in the 4/5 game, losing to #5 Zephyr, of where else Vancouver, 9-11 to go 1-2 on the day, their other loss to the #1 seed Traffic, Vancouver's top team, 7-15. (Traffic recently beat Seattle's Riot at ECC. Link to those results found below).
Junior Open
Overdrive https://canadianultimate.com/index.php/ ... 03?start=9
Seeded 6th of 12 teams, they went 2-1 on the first of two days of round robin play in one of two pools. Friday they will play the #2 seed and Thursday they lost to #3 seeded Hydro out of Quebec 6-15.
Junior Women
Overdrive https://canadianultimate.com/index.php/ ... 3?start=17
In a small 8 team division our young ladies are seeded #2 overall and followed the script Thursday going 3-0 in round robin pool play. Friday they get games against the #1 and #3 seeded teams

2012 WFDF World Junior Ultimate Championships
update: all 3 Finals will be live streamed, details to follow.
Also on tap this week in Dublin Ireland is the WFDF Junior World Championships. The tournament started on Monday and so far Canada's U19 Open and Women's teams are looking good, a lone, tough loss by the Open squad to Colombia. Both teams went through to the semis. Canada Women got Colombia in their semi, the team who upset them last year for the Championship, and they were beaten by them again this year. (waiting on the score). USA and Germany in the other women semi.
In Open, since Canada lost the squeaker to Colombia, they unfortunately got the USA in their semi and also lost, 8-11 on Friday. Colombia and Germany in the other Open semi. Looks like two USA vs. Colombia Gold medal Finals and two Canada vs. Germany Bronze medal games.

More Ulti news this week...

Toronto/Ottawa's GOAT are confirmed for the inaugural, annual U.S. Open Championships and Convention in Colorado this July, just days before Worlds.
http://www.usaultimate.org/usopen/
http://www.usaultimate.org/usopen/competition.aspx#top
https://twitter.com/#!/GOATultimate

Canada at USAU Championships is in question. Should Canada be allowed to compete in the United States annual Championships? Go to the following link to complete the USAU Survey Monkey survey and vote, so Canada can continue to compete with the best USA teams.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2013clubrestructure
(need a USAU membership to fill this out)

From USAU website:
"How do Canadian teams fit into either structure?"
(The suggested structures being the Super Region: http://www.usaultimate.org/competition/ ... ional.aspx
and The Triple Crown: http://www.usaultimate.org/competition/ ... rown.aspx)
"Because both structures are so integrated, from one part of a season to another, and from one season to the next, it is not likely that club teams from Canada could be only partially integrated into either structure. With that in mind, the choices are likely to either fully integrate Canadian teams as part of the chosen structure or completely exclude them. If they are integrated, then qualifying Canadian teams would be considered Tier 1 teams at the US Open and be treated just like US teams throughout the regular season and series. If they are excluded, then Canadian teams could be included at the US Open as international teams, but would not factor in to the regular season or be eligible to compete in the series. This is going to be a question that is included in the feedback process."

Mexico's Women's team, planning to attend Worlds in Japan this summer have been burned big time, with a heavy duty spirit foul, and are looking for a little help.

Not Ulti, but a good spirit story here, (just to balance out the bad spirit from the previous story), : http://vimeo.com/40000072

Canada's Mixed team for Worlds 2012 in Japan just got announced...
More Toronto talent joins the nucleus of Vancouver's Team Fischer Price.
Congrats to Jordon Meron, our lone lady to join the mixed team in their quest for Gold. Newly arrived from Vancouver, playing in Toronto this year, Tiffany Lin is already a member of TFP. http://tcwultimate.weebly.com/1/post/20 ... ament.html
GOAT boys, disappointed they so narrowly missed winning Nationals and with it their main chance to go to Japan, have also joined the roster. Cam Harris, Patrick Mooney, Mark Lloyd and Thomson McNight go for Gold on the mixed team instead.

https://www.canadianultimate.com/index. ... t-uc/1/180

Mooney will also being assistant coaching the U19 team in Dublin this summer for the Junior Worlds. Roster here:
https://www.canadianultimate.com/index. ... r-wjuc2012

Open roster here: http://furiousultimate.com/?p=146

Women will be announced April 25th, so stay tuned.

2012 World Ultimate and Guts Championships July 7-14.
The World Flying Disc Federation 2012 Championships in Sakai, Osaka is hosted by Japan Flying Disc Association. Starting on Saturday July 7, 2012, hundreds of games will take place over the course of one week at the Sakai National Training Center.
The World Championships bring the top National Ultimate and Guts teams in the world together to compete for coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. The Championships are currently held every 4 years, and each participating country is allowed to send one team in each division.

http://wfdf.org/news-media/news/news/39 ... -wugc2012-

Ladies
Help support our Toronto Ladies as they vie for the Gold medal in Japan this July.
http://tcwultimate.weebly.com/support.html
Their main competition will be the Americans of course. This year represented again by the now legendary Fury of San Francisco, currently the gold standard for Ladies Ultimate. The Japanese team Uno, who battled with Fury for gold at WUCC 2010 in Prague going to universe will also be a formidable opponent with their own different, but proven strategies. They have finished second too many times and would love to win the Gold as host.

Open
Check out the Team Canada Open roster with at least 5 Toronto GOATs added to the Furious George/Canada lineup here : http://furiousultimate.com/?p=146

Canada will also send a Mixed team (Team Fischer Price from Vancouver), a Masters team, (Nomads from B.C.) and a Ladie's Masters team currently being assembled for that divisions first appearance at Worlds.

Gotta bring back 4 medals, the shinier the better.
Say two Gold and two Silver

USA Ultimate just announced a restructuring for 2012 Club division teams.

There will now be eight regions instead of six, with each region receiving only one automatic bid and then strength bids for the other 8 spots would go to teams that do well during the season's other sanctioned events and h2h contests.

The most important change didn't happen. There's been lots of talk that Canadian teams would not be included in the USA Series. From skyd Magazine: "Up until today, speculation about Canada’s inclusion in the Series dominated outside discussion, but that has now been put to rest". We're in, (Mexico too).

The most notable change is in the west where the strong Northwest division representing major Ultimate centres in San Francisco, (Revolver, Fury, Blackbird, Polar Bears) Seattle, (Sockeye & Riot) Vancouver (Furious George and Traffic) and now Portland, (Rhino) will be divided. All San Fran teams are now in the Southwest division with the SoCal clubs. Too bad for Southern California's Streetgang, Condors and Safari.
In the South Region, Doublewide (and Mr. Smith) leave and move to the new South Central with Colorado's Johnny Bravo, so Atlanta's Chain Lightening will now have a new rival, as Ring of Fire from North Carolina, join the renamed South East Region.
http://www.usaultimate.org/news/changes ... structure/
http://skydmagazine.com/2012/02/club-di ... open-side/

Original idea for Regions: Wink
https://twitter.com/#!/MachineUltimate/ ... 80/photo/1

...in other news...

Toronto's John Hassell, GOAT's leader on the field, is currently ranked as one of the top 10 Ultimate players in the world along with Vancouver's Oscar Pottinger of Furious fame.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1052 ... ers/page/6

The 2012 Worlds in Japan this July will now host a Women's Masters division thanks to a lot of hard work by the players, led by Anja Haman. A good chance for another Canadian Gold Medal since Vancouver's Stick Dog won the first USA Ultimate Championship for Women's Masters in 2011.
http://www.facebook.com/groups/296963036987300/

Ultimate Canada has just announced the appointment of a new communications Director, Christiane Marceau of Montreal. She will be looking after the UC website, event promos and social media, so that is a positive step to get Ultimate Canada and Ultimate in general, more exposure.

It is fairly well-known that the definitions of throwing fouls permit a devious handler to invite contact in such a way that he may call a foul on the marker. The purpose, of course, is to escape an uncomfortably high stall count. Many of the calls are technically and frustratingly legitimate, but even the ones that are contested still reduce the stall count when the disc is checked in.

Currently, this tactic is still somewhat uncommon just because it is balanced by the economics of opportunity vs. opportunity cost. That is, throwers generally don't like to stop the play, because it usually means there will be no viable throws for at least two seconds once play resumes. However, at stall 8 and higher, the opportunity cost is outweighed by the prospect of some 10 seconds of new opportunity (or, at least 4 seconds, if contested) if the thrower can justify a foul call. This is why we see foul calls spike in frequency at high stall counts, and this is why captains and coaches caution their markers to step out of arm's reach at those high stall counts.

Nat was just pointing out, though, that the "Contact" call removes the inhibiting opportunity cost of making a cheap foul call -- there is no more stoppage. So, that theoretically shifts the equilibrium. We might see more uninhibited players trying to employ the cheap foul tactic, even at middling stall counts. Why not? At first glance, they have nothing to lose, and a handfull of extra seconds to gain. It's even considerably more rewarding than calling "Fast Count."

But, my prediction is that frustrated markers will just exercise their right to a violation call, which is a risk throwers will learn to take into account. So, while I think we might see some experimentation among certain breeds of player, I don't expect to see a very substantial long-term difference in the thrower-marker dynamic.

hmmm I like it!

I agree with Atanarjuat that it will probably not reduce the frequency that this foul happens (since the primary goal of that defensive tactic is to disrupt flow) but at least it gives a bit of a benefit back to the thrower.

Contrary to what Nat was saying, I do think that in this case the marker more commonly causes the foul and therefore the thrower needs to be 'protected'. Yes, there are many throwers who will purposely initiate contact to draw a foul; however, a) that's moreso when the stall count is getting high and they want a free throw/count reset, and b) i've often been taught to use physical contact to disrupt the play as a defender/mark, but rarely if ever been taught to cause contact in that condition as a thrower.. you don't get an advantage there. Oh also, and c) when both thrower and marker are moving/slowing down in that situation, it's almost always going to be a foul on the mark.

curious to see how it plays out!

I'm not sure what you mean by an "'official' rule," so I'll cover all the bases. The new Contact rule has been implemented for the USA Ultimate College Regular Season. Specifically, it is used in the presence of Observers (Section 13). It is not in the current USA Ultimate Rules of Ultimate (11th Ed).

The rule will probably reduce the total number of stoppages, making the game slightly more televisable. That is, the thrower need not stop play when fouled to regain some of the advantage that has been lost.

However, I suspect markers will still foul throwers with approximately the same frequency as usual, because they tend to foul most when aggressively trying to take away a threatening advantage (e.g., the immediate huck continuation). Markers are generally more afraid of a damning break or huck than they are of a slightly prolonged possession. I don't think we'll see less fouling -- just fewer foul calls.

And conversely, throwers can continute to search for cheap contact calls (even ramp up the effort), but if they irritate the marker with that strategy, even the most rules-pious defenders will counter with violation calls to stop play. Thus, the old equilibrium will again be restored.

Curious to hear if TUC will be adopting this rule at all. I'm not sure if this is considered an "Official Rule" or not. (and there may be confusion given all the different supplemental guidance that USA Ultimate has)

Seems like a good addition, though its probably not a huge issue in league play, in general, the less stoppages, the better, IMO.

While a lot of veterans foul intentionally to stop flow or intimidate, just as many vets step into their mark to draw the foul. I wonder how this new 'contact' rule would affect the rate of intentionally drawn fouls.

This applies just to their college series.
For 2012 USA Ultimate is introducing a new rule to reduce intentionally fouling the mark at the beginning of a stall count.
"The vast majority of contact between thrower and marker is a foul on the marker. In the past, teams have systematically cheated and fouled on the mark intentionally in order to shorten the stall count and attempt to intimidate throwers. Offensive players could always have called foul but calling a foul at stall one or two makes little sense. It disrupts the flow of your offense, gets the thrower out of rhythm and even when uncontested yields only a few seconds back on the shot clock." Jesse Kuroiwa “aka Rufio”

Also, they are shortening the end-zones to 20 yards to be in line with WFDF rules.

I think for most of our fields, we've already adopted this rule (or less in a few cases!) Razz.
