Friday, Saturday Women's Pool Play
The two Canadian teams are both playing well, with British Colombia almost making quarters. UBC beat the top seed in their pool and #3 in the tournament, 2nd Place finishers last year, the very strong looking, Michigan Flywheel, 15-13. Unfortunately it was to no avail as Michigan beat #2 in their pool, North Carolina who then beat the Thunderbird ladies, so all three teams finished with identical 3-1 records. Goal differentials sorted out, the three teams ended up in their seeded order which meant UBC was 3rd and got the #2 team from Pool B, Washington. Washington are the #2 seed in the Tournament and also from the NW region. They were upset yesterday by #7 Iowa in a squeaker 15-16. UBC lost the Pre Quarter game to their American neighbours 7-12 and now play Sunday in the 9-12 bracket.
The Ottawa ladies played some solid games but, came up short in all of them to finish 0-4 and now play for either a 13th, 15th, 17th or 19th place tie. On Friday they came close to beating a dark horse favourite, #9 Iowa State, but finished on the short end 13-14. Next they gave the top seed in their pool, #4 over all, California, a close game losing 11-14. Cal who only won two pool games to finish 3rd in Pool D, then also lost in Pre Quarters to join UBC in the 9-12 Bracket. Saturday Ottawa lost both games, one of them to Tufts, who took first place in the pool and now appear to be a team to watch.
Friday, Saturday Open Pool Play
The Open pool play and Pre-Qurters are playing out according to script as all 4 top seeds won their pools, only Pittsburg losing their last, meaningless to the standings game, 12-13. All 2nd place teams then won their pre quarter match-ups against 3rd place opponents. Some exciting action to come Sunday in Quarters and Semis with Finals on Monday.
Lots of Live Streamed Ultimate on tap this Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-28, with the two Finals games on Monday. The teams will meet in Boulder, CO over the 4 days to compete for the 2012 USA Ultimate College Championship. The afternoon Semis and Finals will streamed live for free and then be re-broadast by CBSSports on June 20 and 22, also for free, on their specialty channel.
Over 12,000 student athletes on more than 700 college teams from across North America entered the USA Ultimate College Championship Series in early April. Twenty Open and Women's teams eventually qualified and they include 2 Canadian Women's teams. Ottawa's GGs seeded 20th, plus UBC Thunderbirds out of the always strong NW region, seeded only #10 by USAU, but 8th by Skyd, so maybe an upset in the works. Updates at the bottom of this post...
