Spirit of the Game Rubric

Postby Chewbacca » Tue Jul 08, 2014 2:15 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has access to the 20-point Spirit of the Game Rubric. I use to coach high-school ultimate and there was this Spirit sheet where the ideal score for Spirit was a 10/20. Anything over or under was considered non-ideal - I can't remember why...

Anyway, if anyone has access to it, could you post a link to it? I'd really like to start using it again.

Thanks!

Higher is still better I think. You just need to note the reasons why high scores are given to avoid "good spirit" getting a perfect score, 10/10 or whatever.

Ahhh.. I see. So the idea is that the average team should get "good spirit" and "excellent spirit" is something that requires more effort to achieve. Makes sense. Has anything like this been used in TUC before? I guess it would take some getting use to as people usually hand out perfect scores all the time.

TUC has used it for a couple seasons of Masters league, and for most tournaments in the past couple of years. Jack (being from a country outside North America, where this is what everyone uses) is a big fan. I believe that it was considered for this summer, but we stuck with the status quo because there's an update to it that wasn't ready in time. Maybe this fall?
Did you get that thing I sent you?

Great to hear Greg! Definitely will be looking forward to it. Maybe I'll start working on an App for it. :)

TUC has also used the WFDF's (World Flying Disc Federation) Sprit scoring sheet for summer league playoffs last year and for some tournaments as Greg mentioned. Like Jack, I'm also a big fan. It allows the teams to see where they excel and where they need improvement.

The old system is currently being reviewed by WFDF member countries and the last category will probably be changed from "Their spirit compared to ours" to "Communication". Once it is finalized, it is the goal of Ultimate Canada and WFDF for the revamped system to be the status quo wherever you play.

10 is basic spirit, but most good scores are closer to 14/15. Explanations are required when filling out the sheet if you give a "4" or a "0". Why a team was so excellent or so bad. My hope is to have TUC using the system full time in all divisions and tournaments for 2015.

For the folks who didn't click on the link provided, here are the categories and their explanations;

SPIRIT OF THE GAME SCORE SHEET
Your whole team should be involved in rating the other team!
Circle one box in each of the five lines and sum up the points to determine the SOTG score for the other team.
1. Rules Knowledge and Use
Example: They did not make unjustified calls nor purposefully misinterpret the rules. They kept to time limits and were willing to teach and/or learn the rules.
2. Fouls and Body Contact, (Canada generally doesn't do well in this category)
Example: They avoided fouling, contact, and dangerous plays.
3. Fair-Mindedness
Example: They apologized for their own fouls, informed teammates when they made wrong or unnecessary calls and were willing to retract a wrong call.
4. Positive Attitude and Self-Control
Example: They communicated without aggressive language, complimented us on good plays and left an overall positive impression during and after the game.
5. Their Spirit compared to ours, (this category probably changed to "Communication")
Thinking about your team's rules knowledge, body contact, fair-mindedness, positive attitude and self-control, how did the other team compare? If it was the same, give a "2". If they were worse, give them a 0 or 1. If better, a 3 or 4.
Summing the results
Sum the results of every category to a final number and write it into these boxes (the end result should be between 0 and 20).
Play catch. Invent games. Flat flip flies straight. Tilted flip curves.
