Here's some interesting info on Ultimate in the Phillipines. See below:

"The Philippines is an amazing place.

It’s the Wild East, never a boring moment. And so much fun.

If you’ve been over here before, you’ll know exactly what I mean. If not, you’ve got to come over, and you have the perfect chance with the Manila Spirits International Tournament coming up on 25-26 November 2006.

Yes, we sure play disc over here and yes we even have our own very popular regional tournament. Two in fact. In March, we host the Asian Beach Ultimate Championship on the pristine White Beach of Boracay Island, which is regularly voted to be one of the best beaches in the world.

I’m not sure what you do know about the Philippines other than our four-foot president, but I consider it safe to say that most of you out in the disc world do not yet know that we are fast becoming an Ultimate powerhouse, thanks to the efforts and recruiting drives conducted by a few key people in recent years and the passion of the current disc addicts.

The Philippine Ultimate community has grown exponentially over the last 3 years, evolving from a 4-person throwing-around game to becoming a legit club (Manila Vice) with about 30 members, about 90% of which were expats. Now, in 2006, there are over 500 official members with over 95% of the membership being home-grown locals.

And we are getting good too. We used to be known in other Asian countries solely for our spirit and party skills (which haven't gone anywhere at all) but we are actually now doing really well in our South East Asian regional tournaments.

As a testament to the strength of the sport in the country, the Philippine team (PULA), which incidentally has only a couple of expats on the roster, recently toppled all other teams to win the Manila Spirits tournament in November 2005. It was the first title of its kind for the Philippine team, crashing through formidable opposition from Korea, Singapore, Shanghai and other Asian Ultimate powerhouses.

And in June 2006, PULA came 4th in the intense Shanghai tourney, being beaten by Shanghai A (who ended up champions) in the semis. We are needless to say improving at leaps and bounds, and the community as a whole is extremely diehard about the sport.

The most impressive fact about disc in the Philippines is that we have had a 100% growth in numbers every year since the first forehand was thrown. From a 30-40 player base in 2002, to about 100 local players by the end of 2003. Our first Metro Manila-based league, which took place in January 2003, only had 4 teams. By the end of 2004, we had 11 teams, and 19 teams in our most recent 2006 league (with reigning back-to-back champions Sunken Pleasure 1 boasting a purely Filipino squad). Now that is rapid development.

Guys, this piece is a heads-up to say watch out for us on the international stage. The Philippines will have 2 teams at WUCC06, which is immense considering where Ultimate was here just a couple of years ago.

Come to Manila Spirits in November and get to know us more. “Spiritsâ€￾ draws 16-20 teams from several countries to the magnificent plush green fields of the Manila Polo Club. Check out the grass here - ... rits/field

For those of you traveling all the way to Perth, Australia for Worlds, you might as well extend your holiday a bit to soak in a some more sun, party on for a few more days and take in one of the premier Ultimate tournaments in Australasia, featuring teams from countries like China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, and Taiwan.

Getting to Manila from Perth is easy. If you want to spend a few
days in a hammock, go diving, or wind/kite surfing, we can suggest the perfect islands in the archipelago for you to unwind between Ultimate competitions.

Spirits is a co-ed tourney (like all the tourneys in SE Asia). Last year we moved from a 5-2 set-up to an international standard 4-3 format. A decision has not yet been made for the gender make-up for November, but it will be one or the other.

See here for the details on last year's edition of Spirits, the third time that the competition has been held:

You are guaranteed to have an incredible time. And heck, you may become one of the bevy of foreigners who were supposed to come on a 2 week holiday and have now been here for 15 years.

For more information on Spirits or if you just want to know more about who we are, check out, or send an email to We can’t wait to see you over here.

We welcome you with open arms and numerous deliciously cheap beers."
