Volunteer of the Month
for July is Coby Markus
Coby Markus - July Volunteer of the month

Coby Markus is our Scallywags July Volunteer of the Month. Coby, a first-year Toronto Ultimate Club member, and first-time volunteer was indispensable for TUC at mid-season, helping out with TUC central, score tracking, keeping teams hydrated, and event setup. He was eager and proactive in helping out and generally left a great impression upon everyone he dealt with.

Thanks Coby!

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

Steam Whistle Spirit Winners!

The 2nd session of our summer season (weeks 6-11) have concluded and we are pleased to announce our Steam Whistle Spirit Winners! Congratulations to the following teams who will receive a free case of Steam Whistle Pilsner, courtesy of our friends at Steam Whistle Brewery:

Monday League: El Kabong
Tuesday League: ELEVEN
Wednesday League: Kung Fu Hustle
Thursday League: Ultimate Pretzel Benders

Captains can contact TUC to arrange for pickup of their Steam Whistle. Please note that this prize is for consumption by 19+ members only and is not to be consumed on TUC permitted fields!

Thanks to all of our teams for their continued Spirit this season and keep it going because there is more free beer to be had! All teams who score high in Spirit for the last 5 weeks of the season will be eligible for the next Steam Whistle draw!

World Championships Results

The World Ultimate and Guts Championships and all of Canada's teams (with the help of some TUC members) made a strong showing through out the tournament. For the final results visit all the World's chatter on the BBS or visit the WUGC 2008 Website.

Also good luck to all teams that will be attending the Canadian Ultimate Championships this week in Calgary.

2008 Zodiac Tournament

After a great tournament in Rochester, N.Y. last year, Zodiac returns to Toronto on Sept 20-21. For those unfamiliar with Zodiac, it is a 2-day, very spirited, co-ed (4/3) twelve-team hat tournament. Each player signs up as an individual and is put on a team with fellow players of the same zodiac sign.

Zodiac is a TUC supported event and you can view more details for this event on our Zodiac page.

Ultimate 101 DVD’s Are Finally Here!

Any members who wish to obtain a copy of this educational DVD can pick one up from the TUC office or at upcoming TUC events. We will make them available in next year’s packets as well.

On the day the tournament will run from 9am to approximately 4pm. You must sign up online and then we will draft the teams for the tournament. Be sure to bring your water bottles and both a light and dark shirt. Also be sure to bring a few snacks for lunch, but we will have some fruit and bagels on hand in the morning.

Register online now! for the Hat Tourney

Scally's Cup – WE NEED YOUR NOMINATIONS!

The inaugural Scally’s Cup is an All-Star Challenge (sponsored by Scallywags, of course) that will showcase the top players from TUC’s summer leagues. The event will take place on Sunday, September 14 at BMO Field (premier field!) from 9am to 1pm.

Each captain can nominate player(s) of the opposing teams that they play right up until the end of the summer. From this, we’ll create a divisional All-Star team from each League Night for two divisions – competitive and intermediate (recreational team players are eligible for intermediate division!)

Nominate a Player Now: Captains please keep emailing your nominations. If you haven’t done so yet, please do so! Simply email your nightly convenor and indicate your team, the team you played against, and the name of the player(s) on their team you would like to nominate. Games already played this season may be included.

Visit the Scally’s page on the web for further updates. Pass this poster along to your friends. All TUC members and their friends are invited to watch this exciting event at BMO, then join us afterwards on the Toronto Ultimate Cruise!

Playoff Registration

Registration for the TUC Summer League Playoffs is now open and closes on September 3. If your summer team plans on participating in the playoffs then your captain must sign-up the team by the deadline. Here’s how it works:

- Summer playoffs are optional. If your team does not want to participate or does not have a suitable roster for the tournament, then you don’t have to sign up.
- The players on your team should be listed as regular players on your roster. Pickups are allowed for recreational and lower intermediate teams but they must be TUC members and declared with the opposing captain. Last chance to check your roster!!!
- This year the playoffs are a 3-game, one-day event. The Monday/Tuesday League teams will have their playoffs on Saturday, September 6 and the Wednesday/Thursday League teams will have their playoffs on Saturday, September 13. All games will be at beautiful Sunnybrook Park. Plan on being there the whole day as games will run from 8am – 8pm.
- Teams will be seeded based on their results in the ladders and amongst other teams on their nights. Teams will be placed in power pools of 8 (in most cases) and play a quarter, semi, and final game.
- There will be prizing for winning teams as well as tournament amenities (ie. physio/fruit/on-site partners like GAIA and Daredevil).

Clinic League #3 on Thursdays Starting August 14

Know someone new who wants to learn, or want to take your game to the next level? TUC will be hosting the 3rd of its successful Clinic Leagues program starting August 14.

The Clinic League will run on successive THURSDAYS from 6:30pm to dusk at Monarch Park CI. It will run for 5 weeks, beginning August 14 and concluding September 11. You will get expert instruction on improving your skills, basic team concepts, zones (offence & defense), strategies, rules and much more. Each week will provide a clinic on a specific topic for the first hour, which will then be followed by a scrimmage to practice those concepts. You can view an outline of what will be covered each week here.

You need to be a TUC Member in order to register for this league and registration cost is $25 for all 5 weeks. You can register online now in our registration section (note if you are having difficulties registering please click our How To Register link at the top of the home page).

Pass along to your friends who want to give Ultimate a try!

Sincerely,

- The TUC Team
