for July is Coby Markus
Coby Markus - July Volunteer of the month

Coby Markus is our Scallywags July Volunteer of the Month. Coby, a first-year Toronto Ultimate Club member, and first-time volunteer was indispensable for TUC at mid-season, helping out with TUC central, score tracking, keeping teams hydrated, and event setup. He was eager and proactive in helping out and generally left a great impression upon everyone he dealt with.

Thanks Coby!

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

Congrats to Toronto Teams!

Congratulations to all of our Toronto players and teams who recently competed in the World Ultimate Championships in Vancouver and the Canadian Ultimate Championships in Calgary!

At the World Championships Team Canada stole the show, winning medals in 5 of the 6 divisions. Canada captured Gold in the Mixed Division (17-8 over Japan) and Open Division (17-15 over USA). We captured Silver in the Junior Open and Masters, and Bronze in the Women’s Division. The Junior Women took 5th place.

At the Canadian Ultimate Championships Toronto teams made us proud. DIRT (Juniors) and Fossil (Masters) brought home Bronze medals while our mixed, women’s, and open teams all had strong tournaments.

2008 Zodiac Tournament

After a great tournament in Rochester, N.Y. last year, Zodiac returns to Toronto on Sept 20-21. For those unfamiliar with Zodiac, it is a 2-day, very spirited, co-ed (4/3) twelve-team hat tournament. Each player signs up as an individual and is put on a team with fellow players of the same zodiac sign.

Zodiac is a TUC supported event and you can view more details for this event on our Zodiac page.

Registration for the TUC Summer League Playoffs is now open and closes on September 3. If your summer team plans on participating in the playoffs then your captain must sign-up the team online by the deadline. This year the playoffs are a 3-game, one-day event. The Monday/Tuesday League teams will have their playoffs on Saturday, September 6 and the Wednesday/Thursday League teams will have their playoffs on Saturday, September 13. All games will be at beautiful Sunnybrook Park. Plan on being there the whole day as games will run from 8am – 8pm.

We’re hoping to have Rogers TV air some of our Finals games!!! Stay tuned!

IMPORTANT NEWS

Toronto Ultimate Cruise – Register by September 3!

This season our hard-working Social Committee has put together a fantastic event for the TUC membership, the Toronto Ultimate Cruise. In order to make this event successful we require a minimum number of registrations, or else cut our losses. Therefore, talk to your teammates and friends NOW and register by September 3, before it’s too late!

We have extended the registration deadline for the Toronto Ultimate Cruise to Wednesday, September 3. If we do not receive enough registrations by this date, the event will be canceled.

The Toronto Ultimate Cruise is on September 14, just a few hours after we conclude the Scally's Cup. The cruise will run from 5pm-9pm, aboard a fabulous cruise ship that travels around the harbour and Toronto Island. Ride in style and enjoy a 'Summer Sensation' chicken dinner, a rockin dj dance party, and doing it up with your Ultimate friends!

Cost is $45 per person and registration is done online in our registration section. Price includes boat cruise (with dj) and chicken dinner. Cash bar only. TUC members can register multiple times and buy tickets for their friends. Please note this is a 19+ event.

Get 8 people from your TUC Summer League Team (regular players) to sign-up by September 3 and your team will leave the boat with a free case of Steam Whistle Pilsner!

Pass along our event poster to your friends! Buy your tickets now before it’s too late!!!

Scally's Cup – Update

The inaugural Scally’s Cup is lining up to be one heck of an event. Our TUC All-Stars and spectators will be privy to a bunch of great amenities – here’s a few that we are working on right now:
  • Possible licensed area on the north patio for spectators to have a few drinks while watching our TUC All-Stars
  • Sponsor tents on site (Scallywags, GAIA, Daredevil, Zipcar) to provide you with any product that you missed from the playoffs
  • Prizing for players from our top teams, including commemorative t-shirts, Scally’s dollars, beer vouchers, and of course the Scally’s Cup trophy!
  • 1 top individual Spirit MVP Prize, courtesy of Boreal Journeys in Thunder Bay; this prize is a 5-day all inclusive trip for two, dog-sledding adventure in the Ontario wilderness, valued at $3500!!!

The Scally’s CUP TUC All-Star Challenge will showcase the top players from TUC’s summer leagues. The event will take place on Sunday, September 14 at BMO Field (premier field!) from 9am to 1pm.

The nominations have started to roll in, but we need lots more! It’s imperative that all captains nominate opposing players from their games – if you haven’t done it yet, do it now please! This includes both competitive and intermediate/rec divisions.

Nominate a Player Now: Simply email your nightly convenor and indicate your team, the team you played against, and the name of the player(s) on their team you would like to nominate. Games already played this season may be included.

Visit the Scally’s page on the web for further updates. Pass this poster along to your friends. All TUC members and their friends are invited to watch this exciting event at BMO, then join us afterwards on the Toronto Ultimate Cruise!

Fall League Registration Is Now Open!

Registration for TUC Fall League is now open and spots are already filling up quickly. TUC Outdoor Leagues begin in mid-September and our Indoor Leagues begin in early October/November. Note that we’re doing things a little differently this year for outdoor. Our traditional Sunday League carries on, but we’ve moved single gender leagues to Mondays and they are draft speed point leagues. We’ve also added a new outdoor co-ed speed point league on Wednesdays!

For a complete list of our offerings, visit our Fall Indoor Leagues and Fall Outdoor Leagues pages on the TUC web site.

Be sure to sign up soon as time is flying by – registration and payment confirm your spot and all registration is done online. Be sure to pass this poster along to your friends!

Skills, Drills, & Thrills Clinic September 10

Learn the game at BMO Field!!! This is a beginner clinic and it is the perfect opportunity for new TUC members to come out and review the basics of the game. We’ll focus on throwing and catching as well as some simple game concepts and strategies. Our expert instructors will run you through drills and even include some game action at the end. The clinic is co-ed and open to brand new players, novice players, or even intermediate level players who just want to work on their skills. Cost to participate is $5 for TUC members and $15 per non-TUC member. Bring both a dark and light coloured shirt (for scrimmage) and lots of water to drink!

The clinic will be held at BMO Field, home of Toronto FC! You will get to learn the ropes on premier field turf, in a stadium under lights! The clinic will start at 8pm and conclude no later than 10pm as we must be off the field by this time.

Registration for this clinic will open August 25. You must register online in order to participate. Contact clinics@tuc.org if you have any questions.

There is still room for any players interested in joining the last few weeks of our current Clinic League, which takes place Thursday nights at Monarch Park CI and runs through to September 11.

Sincerely,

- The TUC Team
