Volunteer of the Month
for June is Shawn Lee
Shawn Lee - June Volunteer of the month

When the TUC volunteer bat signal looms in the sky, Shawn Lee comes to the rescue! Shawn is our June Volunteer of the Month. He has been an instrumental volunteer throughout the spring at clinics and our city field cleanup, and he has continued to help out TUC this summer. As a key leader for our Clinics League, Shawn has been helping newcomers learn the ropes of Ultimate every Monday night for the past month. He also popped by for a cameo appearance at our Spirit Hat Tournament, infusing fun and Spirit into our event. Constantly donating his time to help others and to help the Club, Shawn is another great example of what makes TUC such a unique Club.

Thanks Shawn!

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

Pickup on Sundays – Riverdale Park East

TUC offers Sunday pickup at Riverdale Park East, beginning May 25. We have a permit for the space east of the tracks from 2:30pm-5:30pm all summer. All TUC members are encouraged to come down to the field and play pickup!

Congrats to our Juniors National Team Participants!

TUC is pleased to announce that several Toronto Junior players have been selected to represent TEAM CANADA at the upcoming World Championships in Vancouver August 2-9. These players have developed their games through high school, team D.I.R.T. and TUC leagues. Congrats (and good luck!) to the following players!

Junior Open Team: Cam Harris, Dan Dantzig, Giorgio Traini, Thomas Black

Junior Women’s Team: Erica Tucker, Jeanette Quach, Jordan Meron, Tess Sudenis

Also a big congrats to Toronto coaches Kirk Nylen (Open Head Coach), Peter Jamieson (Open Asst Coach), Sheri Madigan (Women’s Head Coach), and Lexi Marsh (Women’s Asst Coach).

TUC Time Caps

As the summer nights slowly become shorter, please keep an eye on the TUC Time Caps located on our Events Calendar. Note there is a time cap for each week (listed on the Friday) and you should adhere to the time cap that last preceded your game date.

If your game looks like it will go beyond this time, captains should discuss (and agree) on how to end the game. The official ruling is you should complete the current point when you reach a time cap. If a team is then leading by more than two points, the game is over. Otherwise add 1 point to the highest score and whoever reaches that score first wins.

If it gets too dark to play, please stop and tie scores are acceptable!

IMPORTANT NEWS

Steam Whistle Summer Spirit Winners

TUC continues to regard Spirit as a fundamental guiding concept of Ultimate Frisbee and a very important part of our leagues! In 2008, top spirited teams receive prizing courtesy of our friends at Steam Whistle Brewery.

After the first 5 weeks of the summer season all of the top SOTG teams were eligible, and one winner from each league night was drawn. Congratulations to the following summer teams who are the winners of a free case of Steam Whistle beer!

Monday League: Poo
Tuesday League: M.o.t.H.
Wednesday League: Big Kahunas
Thursday League: LC

Captains can contact TUC to arrange for pickup of their Steam Whistle. Please note that this prize is for consumption by 19+ members only and is not to be consumed on TUC permitted fields!

Thanks to all of our teams for displaying some amazing Spirit so far. Only 7 teams (across all nights) scored lower than 8.5, which is outstanding. We encourage all teams to continue to play with Spirit and we urge all captains to give careful consideration to your Spirit scoring. All teams will be eligible for the next round of Steam Whistle prizing, from weeks 6-10.

Toronto Juniors Summer League Update

TJSL has already begun, but it’s not too late for Junior players to join in on this great program. This league is for youth aged 18 and under (recommended ages 15-18). It is co-ed, open to all skill levels, and it focuses on skill development and game play. Players can play with their friends and depending on the skill level of the players, we can adapt the games accordingly to balance competition and make it fun.

We play every Wednesday from 6:30 – 8:30pm. Our TJSL West AND TJSL East have now been merged and both are taking place at St. Patrick CS. We have on site coaches who coordinate skill learning and games.

Cost to participate is $25 per league and you must be a registered TUC Junior member with completed waiver. Visit the TUC Juniors page for information.

Mid Season Tournament July 19-20

Registration for the TUC Mid Season Classic is now open and closes Monday July 14. Registration is by TEAM ONLY and is free to all TUC Summer Teams.

The Mid Season is a great opportunity for all players to test their skills against teams from different nights and divisions. It also is a great way for teams to prepare for the second half of the season and the summer playoffs. All games will be played at beautiful Sunnybrook Park and teams will 6 games. The usual tournament amenities (morning bagels/fruit, on-site physio) will be provided and we hope to have a few of our sponsors on-site as well.

Scally’s Cup – Let the Nominations Begin!

TUC is introducing a brand new event that showcases top players and celebrates Summer League. We will also be hosting the inaugural Scally’s Cup – TUC All Star Challenge on Sunday, September 14, 9am-1pm at BMO FIELD. Here’s how it will work:

Throughout the summer captains can nominate ‘All Star’ players from their 2008 summer league games. They will nominate males and females from other teams (not their own) that they thought were exceptional players in those games and from our lists we will form divisional all-star teams for each night. Those teams will then compete against each other and showcase the best skills that TUC has to offer. There will be two divisions (competitive and intermediate) for each night. Both intermediate and recreational team players (east and west) qualify for the intermediate all-star teams.

To nominate a player captains simply email their nightly convenor and indicate their team, the team they played against, and the name of the player(s) they would like to nominate. Games already played this season may be included. A nomination from every game is not required, just nominate exceptional performances please. The nomination process is now open!

Our convenors will tally the results and in late August we will announce the All-Star teams. All TUC members and their friends are invited to watch this exciting event at BMO. There will be lots of great prizing courtesy of Scallywag’s and our other sponsors and the division winners will get to hoist the Scally’s Cup. We’re working on more amenities and hope to tie in the TUC AGM, party, etc.

We want lots of nominations and we want lots of spectators/partygoers at this event!!! Let’s make this one for the ages and a true celebration of TUC Ultimate!

TUC Premier Turf Fields in 2008

Up until 2 years ago all of our summer outdoor games were played on natural grass fields. However, TUC has worked very hard to acquire rental time on new premier fields that feature state-of-the-art sport turf surfaces. Sport turf never wears, properly drains, and is quite soft – it is a revolutionary surface that blows the old ‘Astro Turf’ out of the water!

Starting next week, TUC will feature its FOURTH premier sport field for Summer 2008. TUC will host games at the new Downsview Park outdoor sport fields on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Games will run in two timeslots (6:30-8:30pm, 8:30-10:30pm).

Here is a snapshot of our premier turf summer fields:
