Hello TUC Member

WINTER INDOOR LEAGUE REGISTRATION!

Winter League registration, originally slated to start end of November, will now open on Monday, November 6. This gives you ample time to plan your new year around the TUC Indoor season! Each indoor season (and subsequently team) is named for the Chinese calendar and this season is the Year of the Dog.

We are pleased to announce a NEW DOWNTOWN LOCATION AND CO-ED TEAM LEAGUE for winter. The University of Toronto Varsity Centre (read profile below) will play host to a new Monday Co-Ed Night. This is a premier field in a premier location with premier time slots… can you say “I wanna play in this league”?!?!? There are 10 Team spots available and 24 individual (2 hat team) spots available on a first-come first-serve basis.

We also still offer Men’s & Women’s Leagues, now offered on Tuesday evenings. And of course, our Thursday Individual night is back, at a better price rate than Fall League ($15 more dollars for two more weeks AND a dry-fit shirt!). Limited team and individual spots available.

Indoor Clinic November 16

Weather won’t stop this one! We will host a Beginner/Intermediate clinic on Thursday, November 16, from 6 – 7 p.m. at the Downsview Hangar (Field # 2). The clinic will focus less on “how to throw a disc” and more on movement, drills, and strategies. This is a perfect opportunity for newer players to grasp the Ultimate “game” concept more clearly for their Fall outdoor or indoor teams.

Pre-registration for this event is mandatory and space will be limited to the first 30 people. Cost is $5 for TUC members and $10 for non-TUC members. In the event that more than 30 people sign up, preference will be given to TUC members. To book your spot in the clinic email clinics@tuc.org and indicate your skill level (beginner or intermediate). Fees will be collected on-site and must be paid in order to participate.

Fall Outdoor League Update – Finals & Party November 26

Wednesday Outdoor League playoffs conclude on November 8 and Sunday Outdoor League playoffs conclude on November 26. The winners of the Outdoor Leagues will have their names emblazoned on the new “Barley & Hops” Fall League Trophy, named for the great Harry Burkman and his trusty canine sidekicks who have been roaming TUC sidelines for over 12 years. With Harry too modest to allow a trophy in his name despite his decades of contributions to the Club and the sport of Ultimate, we decided to go with “man’s best friend” and an icon of many TUC families…. plus the double entendre of TUC post-game activity never hurts!

Will Harry’s “Red October” clan win its FIFTH consecutive Fall Outdoor Championship or will one of the other five Tier 1 teams knock them out? On November 26 at 3 p.m. at Central Tech we invite you to come and watch the Sunday final and find out for yourself. Following the final game we’ll all head over to the Ferret & Firkin at 720 Spadina Ave (Bloor & Spadina) to present the trophy and celebrate another great Fall season. We hope to see you there!

Volunteer Year-End Party

In appreciation for all of the hard work and commitment that volunteers give to TUC, we are hosting a Volunteers-Only Party on Sunday, December 3, from 3 – 6 p.m. All invitees will get to play FREE indoor Ultimate, followed by volunteer awards and a mix-n-mingle afterwards at a nearby pub. This is our way of saying THANKS (!!!) to those who make the TUC culture a special and unique experience.

If you volunteered for a TUC-specific event in 2006 and would like to participate, please contact volunteers@tuc.org.

New President for TUC

Congratulations to Andrew Hunter who is the new President of the Board of Directors for the Toronto Ultimate Club! Andrew was recently appointed to the position after the new By-Law was passed and formal Executive Committee dissolved. He has served on various committee positions, including most recently, Secretary for both the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Andrew was also the 2005 Volunteer of the Year and has been a fixture at TUC events.

A big thanks to Thomas Meyer and Alison Fletcher for their key leadership roles on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors in 2006. Tom has served on both committees and has been a key contributor to TUC’s success over the past two decades. He will now focus his energies on Junior Development for the Club. Alison will remain as Chair of the Board of Directors, in the capacity of meeting protocol and as a Director. She is also Co-Chair of the 2007 Canadian Ultimate Championships Committee.

Policy Updates

We have recently updated two policies and our indoor rules, as well as introduced a new Police Reference Check Policy for TUC volunteers who are leading Juniors activities. Please take a few moments to review the policies, located under “About TUC” on the web site:

New Winter Indoor Venue – Varsity Centre @ U of T

TUC has been working hard to improve its winter facilities and we are pleased to bring you our best yet! The new and improved Varsity Centre, on the University of Toronto campus, offers a climate controlled bubble over its new state-of-the-art field surface known as Polytan-Ligaturf. This turf is the first of its kind in Canada and 1 of less than 20 FIFA 2-star fields in the world. So what does this all mean? It means you get to play on the newest, softest turf in the City; only a short pull from Queen’s Park (Bloor & Devonshire). For more information on this great new field for TUC visit www.varsitycentre.ca.
