Canadian Nationals Updates?

Postby tcharb@hotmail.com » Fri Aug 16, 2013 11:06 am

Any updates from Canadian Nationals over in Vancouver? The Junior division ran from Monday to Wednesday. Open, Mixed, Women, and Masters runs from Thursday to Sunday. For the first time there is a women masters division at Nationals, although there are only four teams. Noticed that Vancouver/Victoria region have something like 9 or 10 junior touring teams while the GTA has only 2 or 3. I have noticed at various tournaments that the Furious George players are quite involved in coaching junior teams from B.C.

Thanks for the stats, but I was kind of hoping for more of a game analysis. This is when I miss Rob Camp. Always looked forward to his predictions for the various league championships and Nationals. It is a shame that GOAT and the Capitals decided not to attend these Nationals. It is pretty much a given that Furious George will win the Open division, but I am curious as to which teams will dominate the other divisions and what will be the most surprising upsets.

The Open game is a real barn burner between defending champs MOFO of Winnipeg and Wild Card of Vancouver, (formerly Vortex).

Previews & Updates
Open
(1) Furious George have a nucleus of top players returning plus a whole bunch of rookies. Looks like they are missing star receiver Brendan Wong and key handler Nick Menzies, but no worries.

Who makes the Finals to challenge the Monkey? In power pools on Friday, local heroes (6) GT upset Winnipeg's (3) General Strike on universe to be part of the puzzle. Ottawa's (2) Phoenix and Montreal's (4) Mephisto are also in the mix and Vancouver's young squad (7) Ritchie & Friends may surprise.

Grand Trunk have picked up GOATs Anatoly Vasilyev, Thomson McKnight, and Skysaiah Masek-Kelly, plus Liam Bradford of the Rush to aid in their efforts to win a bid to Italy. GT make quarters, but lose a tough one to Mephisto and now play the 5-8 bracket.

GT beat Vancouver Blackfish 14-10 and Calgary The Ghosts to finish fifth. So close to earning a WUCC bid. SW Ontario Maverick were 9th, Ottawa Firebird 15th.

Chesapeake Invite
Most of GOAT is committed to play this weekend at the Chesapeake Invite, part of the 2013 USAU Triple Crown Tour. GOAT go 3-1 on Saturday, so far only losing to nemesis, Boston's Ironside again after leading them at half, but couldn't hold on, 13-15 final. Minneapolis Sub Zero are the surprise of the tournament and are GOAT's final opponent Sunday morning before the Championship bracket is set.

In Pool A, Ironside beat GOAT, Sub beat the Boat, so now Toronto need to beat Sub. That will put all 3 teams at 4-1. Saturday night and Sub Zero and Ironside are +1 and GOAT -2, so Sunday morning a Toronto win by 2 is required to advance with Boston to the semis.

Final score GOAT 13... Sub Zero 12, so they go 4-1, but finish 3rd, missing out on semis by one goal. ACK. Playing in the Fival, first against Raleigh Ring of Fire. GOAT beat Ring 15-12 and then beat Atlanta Chain Lightening 15-13 to finish fifth. Means they only lost one game all weekend, but still finished fifth.

Clapham United of London England beat Chain this morning in Pool B on DGP to beat their seed and make semis agaisnt Ironside. Sub Zero gets New York PoNY in the other. Final Sub Zero 15 vs Ironside 10, WOW Frrrrrosty

Women
Same deal as Open, who will play local favs and top international team Traffic in the Finals. The newly formed Montreal team, Nova, looked good at the U.S. Open and are seeded #2. Winnipeg's (3) Fusion has already had something to say about that, upsetting Nova on universe during Friday's pool play. Guelph's infamous (6) PPF, Quebec's (4) QUB and Vancouver's 2nd team, (5) Zephyr are also contenders.

PPF are led by Captial's Darcy Drummond and Megan Thomas. They have also picked up T.O. Team Canada U23 ladies Erin Bussin and budding superstar Cindy Truong.

Toronto Lotus finish 9th, one place above seed, beating Calgary Wild Rose and Capital Martha Paterson 10-8. PPF 5th, Ottawa Stella 7th.

Mixed
(3) Union upset (1) Odyssee in convincing fashion 15-9 during Friday's power pools. They have picked up Capitals, Malissa Lundgren, Kate Jardine and Hadiya Roderique. Vancouver's world famous (4) Team Fisher Price and a new Vancouver team (2) Stache, who are led by former Furious veteran and Team Canada World Games team captain Andy Collins, are also in contention.

Stache also have ex Furious stars, Andrew Lugsdin, Mike Grant, Marc Seraglia and Alex Hughes. Women include Mel Harder, Jen Kwok & Tasia Balding.

Union go into Saturday's quarters as the top ranked team after upsetting Odyssee in power pools on Friday. Their first game is against the Prairies' Bunny Thugs and if all goes according to script, which it should, they get the winner of Vancouver's (6) Skysharks and (5) Sherbrooke's Gecko in the semis.

(1) Odyssee, (2) Stache, and (4) TFP are all in the opposite bracket.
TFP have brought together star receiver Brendan Wong from Furious George along with Nighthawk teammates, top defender Aaron Liu and receiver Mark Leduc to compliment dual citizens and handleers, the Norden brothers, Justin and Jeremy. The younger Justin just won gold while leading Team USA Mixed at WFDF U23s

(13) Toronto NoBS finished 10th beating their seed. (7) Durham/Toronto Alliance ended the weekend in Vancouver 11th.

Masters Open
(6) Black Bear is representing Ontario including local boyz, Chris Chapman, Chris Loat, Daniel Tascona, Michael Good, Kevin Christensen, Greg Kramer, Scott Belair, Juan Gomez and some guy named Greg Lang who is attending his 27th consecutive Nationals.

Calgary's FIGJAM is looking like the team to beat. NSOM of Montreal the favourite to meet them in the Final. With only 8 teams and 3 bids to Italy this will be interesting. Tune in Saturday to see who's in the Final.

Black Bear is at 3-3 with one more game to play & still with a chance to make semis. They play their last game against Winnipeg's (5) Flood also 3-3, first thing Saturday morning at 8:30a PDT, so winner makes semis and the loser goes to the placement bracket.

Black Bear lose on universe 12-13 to Flood, so they miss out on a bid opportunity for 2014 WUCC and now play for the Fival. Black Bear finished play in the placement bracket and drank black beer.

Masters Women
The first time ever division for the ladies.
Toronto Terra is led by veteran Capitals, Carla DiFilipo, Alena Papayanis, Nat Fitzgerald, Josee Guibord and Merideth MacNaughton. This is the herstory setting division. Four teams seeking one bid to WUCC in 2014.

Toronto Terra went into the 4 team division seeded 4th, but went 2-1 in pool play, won their semi over (1) Vancouver Contraband 12-11 after an earlier DGP win in pool play 14-13. Terra brings home the silver!
