Closest I had to crickets...

It appears a number of GMs have significant cap space available, while Carter and Jarel are still over. The prize for the unlucky members of those teams is at least one game with a team that really needs a win this week. (Full disclosure, I'm watching to see if that is going to be me)

Congrats to Darrel and Steel for making a huge 4:4 trade that is so good, so good, so good.

Let's go GMs! I'm looking forward to making some bold playoff predictions.

Music Lesson #9: The world's most expensive-ever guitar picks cost $5,000 AUS a pair. The 2007 Starpics were made from meteors that were 4 billion years old. (Or 4,000,000,010 years by now). Not sure who bought them. My guess: Kevin Spacey.

Chik is very busy so I'm filling in again. Please read my music lesson above. Calculations may or may not be correct but check out that music lesson.

The TPL Betting Pool aka the Soupcan Memorial Degenerate Player Pool aka The Roadies Cup is back for season X, We’re no strangers to Hucks, You know the rules and so do I, A full in-cut’s what I’m thinking of, You wouldn’t get this on any other team. I just want to tell you where I’m throwing, gotta make you understand. Never gonna look you off, never gonna let you down, never gonna sub off and desert you, never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna throw away and hurt you.

We will be keeping track of % of correct pics throughout the season.

Spreads will be used to handicap the match-ups.
Note A Sharp: "Team A (-1.5) vs Team B" means that Team A is favoured to win by 1.5 points.
Note B Minor: Side bets will count in the results.
Note C Major: Gamblers must make a minimum 35 bets over the course of the season in order to be eligible to win the Soupcan.

Welcome to week 10 of TPL X the minds running on empty with write ups, but we’re still chugging along here. Does anyone read these anymore? The playoffs are fast approaching and teams are getting, if not already set so we’re looking at seeding now. Will this be as tight of a race as the NHL and NBA races, No, it’ll be tighter. TPL FTW!!!

Tojo PoWiese Club (-0.5) Vs Reluctantly Nickelback
Side bet - Most G’s: Remi Jr Ojo + Carolina Vargas (-0.5) or Sarah Burke + Matthew Colphon
Whoo hoo Canadian Content!!! This feels like the CRTC has gotten involved to make sure that we get our requisite Canadian songs in amongst all of their American contemporaries. Take that American Music. Too bad both teams are languishing on the bottom of the charts.

Tenacious D and the pick of Destin (-0.5) Vs Sweet Darroline
Side bet - Most D’s: Natalie Dunn + Colin Thompson (-0.5) or Christopher Wang + Helen O’Sullivan
Two teams in the middle of the playoff picture, jockeying for position to try to make sure they don’t face too tough of a matchup early on. Both teams are looking for the edge in this matchup. Steroid testing will be done on the sidelines as both Destin and Darrel look a little TOO jacked for this game.

KISS Vs Jarnaked Ladies (-1.5)
Side bet – Most A + 2A’s: Matthew Harder + Jill Elliot (-0.5) or Puja Ahluwalia + John Hurlbut
KISS has toured alongside numerous other bands in their 40 + years on the road. They’ve played with Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and Aerosmith, but only in TPL will you see the Rock and Roll hall of fame inductees play on the same stage as the Barenaked Ladies. That’s right folks. Get your tickets while they're hot and before the Monarch park scalpers get their mitts on them.

Steele Maiden Vs Black Agath: IrHin Man (-2.5)
Side bet – Most G + A + 2A’s + D’s: Stephanie Kimmerle + Jeff Chik or David Ip + Genevieve Daigle (-0.5)
Another first vs last matchup here this week. While Steele Maiden has had their fearless leader back for a few weeks, they have not been able to string together a consistent amount of wins. It’ll be hard for them to gain any traction with playoffs looming in the distance. Can they get their act together or will Black Agath’s Hand of Doom send them spiraling forever Into the Void.

Simon and Gosfunkel (-1.5) Vs Led Zepplam
Side bet – Most G+A+2A’s: Andrew Gosbee + Valerie MacDougall or Brittany Heath + Peter Hawkings (-0.5)
Remember when Led Zepplam was 0 and a billion and was buried in last place? Good ol parity, Now they’re sitting in 8th place and moving on up. Gosfunkel has remained consistent all year, but can they hold off the surging Led’s rise to the top, or will they be Trampled Under Foot.

Limp Iskric Vs Carter USM (-1.5)
Side bet – Most 2A + D’s: Stephanie Schwartz + Saleh Mohamed or Mark Taylor + Debra Cohen (-0.5)
I won’t lie here. I’m not sure where to go with this write up. After 10 weeks of writing these things I’m at a loss for how to get Limp Bizkit and Carter USM into a reasonable and ultimately funny (to me at least) write up…so I’m just gonna tell you that I’m not sure what to write and leave it at that. Yep that’s what I’m doing. If you're still reading this, and I believe I’ve lost most of the audience by now, I’d just like to say Hot Dog, Let’s Get Tattoos (drops mic).

Hey TPL.

Ready to read something way too long? Playoff Predictions are here! Teams have been sorted into three categories: Favourites/Near Favourites and Dark Horses in no particular order within those bands! Take a look at where your team is, call the evaluators dumbies and prove them wrong! (unless you're on hin-agatha's team when we called on you to win the whole thing....don't prove us wrong). TL:DR? Just scroll to your team! This is some major locker room chalkboard inspirational stuff...except TPL doesn't have Chalk boards or Locker Rooms.

The Favourites

BLACK AGATH: IRHIN MAN
GMs: Agatha Hodsman and Hin Tang
Record (as of week 9) 7-2-0

Why they’ll win it:

With apologies for missing them in the podcast, Hin-Agatha have to be my current favourites to take it all. With 5 strong ladies up and down the board, Hin-Agatha made some moves to remind people why they should be taken seriously. Reuniting Warren’s favourite duo (Gabe Isaac and Vince Poon), Hin’s team has height, depth up and down their team, and the ability to put the disc anywhere they want and also to keep it. Key players to look out for include Norm Lew, Keegan Lew-Newbury, Alyne Azucena and Agatha Hodsman

Why they won’t:

When I say this team can keep the disc, I mean they have the ability to move things around quickly and easily. That also means there’s a high chance of turnovers, if this team gets behind, and starts trying to put things up to catch up, look for a close game to quickly become a blow out as the TAs mount. This team isn’t particularly tall either, while Norm and Keegan have the hops to punish anything over the top, the rest of the team could struggle with taller targets.

Steele Maiden
GM: Jeff Steele
Record (as of week 9): 3-6-0

Why they’ll win it:

Hard to argue with the former #1 salaried player rounding back in form, shoring up his ladies with Dani who can move the disc better than almost any lady, and a plethora of guys who can put the disc anywhere on the field including Dario Zgrablić, Jason Chan and Jeffrey Chik.. Backed by Nathaniel Faries who is proving why he is one of Toronto's best defenders, he has solid bottom end for both ladies and guys with special notes to Maxim and Charles Burger for being extremely undervalued. Key Players to look out for include: Jeff Steele, Nathaniel Faries, Dani Leung, Stephanie Kimmerle and Farra Kurniawan. Ben Kirkland gets a shout out for adding me on Facebook shortly after I wrote this.

Why they won’t:

Defensive Wizard Nathaniel Faries is far off his D total from last season, and Steele and him are the only two true strikers on the team. While this team may move the disc around, they could have trouble scoring. The very real possibility of handlers resetting the disc constantly while there is nothing upfield is a very real possibility. Getting the disc into Steele’s hands in the backfield could leave the handler lines too clogged resulting in a stagnant offense. This team is last in goals and assists showing how much reliance was placed on Steele when he was on the Disabled list. (Sub stats do not count towards a team's official stats)

Simon & Gosfunkel
GM: Andrew Gosbee
Record (as of week 9): 5-2-2

Why they’ll win it:

Gosbee has surrounded himself with two premiere and extremely undervalued lady handers in Kristie Ellis and Ann-Marie Carey. Pairing himself with Greg McMullin, these four have a silly forest of tall elite receivers including Aaron Hooper, Julian Weinrib, and Kenny Ye. This team has bargains at every position and its’ hard to find a weak point in this roster. The Gosbee men will grind all day. Key Players to look out for include: Aaron Hooper, Julian Weinrib, Kristie Ellis and Ann-Marie Carey.

Why they won’t:

This team is lacking in male handlers. With Greg injured for the past few weeks, will he be in form for playoffs? Three of the four individuals leading in assists have question marks coming into playoffs, with the aforementioned Greg still being injured, and Hooper and Weinrib being far more effective as give and strike cutters. Will Hooper and Weinrib end up in the backline a lot negating their effectiveness as elite receivers? Gosbee’s lower level ladies are vulnerable to speedy strikers. Look for teams like Kaity’s Marko’s or Destin’s to take advantage.

Sweet Darroline
GM: Darrel Nantais
Record as of Week 9: 4-4-1

Why they’ll win it:

Certain GMs gravitate to the same players, Nick with Emma Seaborn, Carter with Grundy, even Warren Tang with Gabe Isaac, we know what they can do, we trust them and we build our team around them. Well coincidence or not, Darrel is bringing the band back together with Janine Duffy. With her fearlessness from playing D-1 hockey, Janine and Darrel gun sling their way to victory. With Lachlan, Robert Jackson, and Dexter Chu pulling down goals, this team will run…and gun…and then run some more. This is all before even mentioning Mr. 3 Way Trade Tab Chris Wang who just sits outside of the top 10. Wangers is a force to be reckoned with, having the hops, throws and speed to play any style you need….all without throwing away the disc. This team is a favourite because there are still more names to talk about such as Fowler and Cristina Chern who make this team one that is dangerous up and down the line. Look for hammers and hucks over the top all day. A balanced, high scoring juggernaut. Key Players to look out for include: Chris Wang, Lachlan Holmes, Janine Duffy, Cristina Chern

Why they won’t:

The Phoenix Suns (circa Steve Nash) of TPL always had one problem: what happens when your offense isn’t clicking. As high-flying as this team will be with their throws, the potential for them to throw themselves out of a game at any point is ever present with Darrel and Janine having “won” the Duff-man award for most throwaways last season. The flip side of a high-risk, high-reward offense is what happens when you don’t get rewarded. This team could see a lead evaporate in seconds. Nevertheless, this is a team that should do fine in the playoffs. Darrel’s sweet Darroline cheer is just too catchy for us not to sing along….Sweeettttttt Darrooolineeee ba ba baaaaa

The Near-Favourites

Reluctantly NICKelback:
GM: Nick Hung
Record (as of week 9): 3-6-0

Why they’ll win it:

That lady core is one of the best in the league and by lady core I mean all five of Nick’s ladies are dope, fine, and fast. Emma Seaborn anchors the handler line, and Natalie Fitzgerald, Amanda Sheppard, Sarah Burke (Borke!) and Marisa Hart are simply a terrifying line up of high-energy non-stop ladies. There is nowhere to hide or rest on Defense against this team’s ladies, and on O, Nickelback’s ladies have some very underrated defenders, especially the “Hart Burke(rs)”. This isn’t to sneeze at the guys either. Andy Milne forms the other half of the Union handler dynamic duo, and has the ability to put it anywhere on the field at any time, and paired with defending Goals Champion Tyler Curtis (dude put up 99 goals one season) form an offensive juggernaut. Engines Jonathan Brunetti and Anthony Slater do a little of everything and will make sure the offense and defense doesn’t drop in performance when the stars are resting. Bottom guys appear to be solid. Players to look out for: Natalie Fitzgerald, Emma Seaborn, Andy Milne, Tyler Curtis

Why they won’t:

This team hasn’t won in six weeks. Months have gone by without a win. Putting a bunch of great players doesn’t mean chemistry and this team has struggled to be on the same page over the past few weeks. Nickelback has traded away most of its top end handlers, and when Emma and Andy are not on the field, the lower level handlers are not nearly of the same caliber. Reliance on the Andy/Ty game makes the offense predictable. Rightly or wrongly, TPL is still considered a male dominated league and it’s a gamble for Nickelback to spend so much money on ladies. This is a balanced, fast, tall team but one that could be more of a glass cannon. Powerful but vulnerable. Also, does anyone want Photograph to be the theme song of a winning team?

Tenacious D and the Pick of Destin
GM: Destin McQuillan
Record as of Week 9: 5-3-1

Why they’ll win it:

When you look at the stats from Destin’s team last week, one number bounces out: the sheer number of touches this team gets. Destin’s team threw 231 passes. By comparison, the team with the lowest number of throws last week threw 160. Did I mention Destin’s team also put up 28 goals? Destin’s team is littered with similar style players: Fast, lean with mad hops. MVP Candidate Bill Banaag after a small mid-season slump is making his way back up to contention, and has instant chemistry with Destin’s core of Destin, Stephanie Harper, Travis Dewolf, and Eric Palmitesta. This team has speed, and watching their throws ping pong each other is a great way to get whiplash. Triple threat Young Colin Thompson is having a break out season, with balanced handling and a nose for the end zone. Players to look out for include: Destin McQuillan, Stephanie Harper, Bill Banaag, and Travis Dewolf.

Why they won’t:

Fast, lean with mad hops is also code word for short. While this team is by no means an army of children, this team lacks the traditional six three guy who can rip sh%t down or at least make life difficult for that guy while Tenacious D’s players are all capable defenders, they will have to use a lot of energy trying to get up to defend players like Kirk Mcrae or Jeff Steele. If this team starts to clog each other, finding that space to run onto discs for score will be difficult. If they get into each other’s way, it won’t matter how many passes they throw, it won’t end up in the end zone.

TOJO PoWIESE Club
GMS: Remi Ojo Jr. and Laura Wiese (also known as RW&CO.)
Record (as of Week 9): 3-5-1

Why they’ll win it:

This team is led by the Black Dragon himself, the Remi Ojo Jr. but wait Remi’s not on the top of the leaderboard, Ian Bone is. Wait he’s on this team too!?! Will Mercer, Ian Bone and Remi on the field together will present match up issues on O but especially on D where their sheer athleticism will cause hucks and backhands, flicks, scoobers, hammers, pretty much all throws to get swallowed into a vacuum of Ds. Their ladies are anchored by Co-GM Laura Wiese, Heidi Siu, and Meghan Janssen. These ladies are as fivesome do not stop hustling and are bang for their buck. Remi may cut for the Rush but his backhand breaks are almost as good as Kieran’s lefty breaks and this team can move the disc. They’ll get plenty of opportunities to score. Key Players include Remi Ojo, Ian Bone, Heidi Siu, Laura Wiese

Why they won’t:

The Old Adage goes Defense wins championships. The issue is that eventually you have to score. Remi is better suited to be fed discs from the mid field, but will have to handle more often that he’d prefer negating for a period of time their best cutter. This team will struggle to score, and will have to hope to have enough possessions to keep up the pace. Look for mid game corrections by Remi or else this team will end up with more Ds than Goals, an interesting stat but one that sadly doesn’t lead to Wins.

Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine
GM: Carter Chin
Record (as of Week 9): 6-3-0

Why they’ll win it:

Defending Champion Carter Chin had a formula last season around a super strong defensive core, chemistry, super strong ladies and a strong supporting cast. Boy won it all. This year, he’s replicating his success bringing back many of the same players or replicating the same style. Mark Taylor returns with his Perennial #1 guy who doesn’t cost a #1 Rob Grundy, aka Carter’s favourite player in TPL period. Third overall pick Wes George and David Yu form a formidable foursome. Carter has banked on chemistry all season with his favourite paring and BFF’s Lindsay Musalem (MOOSEEEE!!) and Lucy Chu (CHOO CHOO!!!) as his female core, with Vikki Shimoda, a last minute add to his team adding a nice striking element. He’s got the 2nd, 5th and the defending ladies goal champion on this team. Not a bad lady line at all. On cap impact alone, Carter invests the most out of any team in his women and his strong record is reflective of the usefulness of a strong lady strategy. Strong defensive core, chemistry, strong ladies, strong supporting cast. Check check check check. This is a good looking team with the potential to make a lot of noise in the playoffs. Key Players include Rob Grundy, Mark Taylor, Lindsay Musalem, and Lucy Chu.

Why they won’t:

When Carter won it all, he had Mark Taylor, Rob Grundy, Matt Denton, and Gosbee as his core men. With Grundy taking the reigns as the top man, the question remains if the supporting cast can replicate the same magic as last season. Lady core is fast but short. The recipe is the same as last years but it’s unclear if the ingredients are up to the same challenge. Bottom of the roster is solid but unspectacular and it’s questionable if they can keep up the pace when the superstars are resting.

The Dark Horses

Led ZeppeLam
GM: Baron Lam
Record (as of Week 9) 3-5-1

Why they’ll win it:

This is a team a few weeks ago had only one point, and looked in danger of staying in the basement the whole season. What a turnaround.
Strong Male core of Galloway, Baron and MVP Candidate Gareth Cawley dominates the field both offensively and defensively. Of note, is the fact that despite two players in the top 15 (Gareth and 50/50), Led Zeppelam sits in the middle of the pack in throwaways, as the rest of Baron’s teams are relatively conservative with the disc. With 4 players scoring goals in double digits, 5 in double digit assists, 5 in Hockey assists and 4 in Ds, this team spreads the love, and this balance makes it hard to key on any one particular player. With Galloway leading the way, this team is #1 in the league in Ds. This is not to note, the plethora of strong support players on this team including Peter Hawkings, don, and Adam Wennerman. This team is a phoenix in the rising and is a true dark horse. Players to look out for include: Catherine Chao, Krista Bennatti-Roberts, Gareth Cawley, and Matthew Galloway.

Why they won’t:

On TPLing with Limp Iskric: the Podcast, we mentioned that Led Zeppelam had the lowest amount spent on women. Fast but inexpensive Catherine Chao, Krista Bennatti-Roberts and Anna Luo anchor their lady line. While they present great value, there isn’t a true shut down defender or pure handler/scorer on this line. Look for lady match ups to cause major issues within games if teams can exploit it. The question arises if the men have to poach to help shut down striking ladies creating angles of attack for the opposing team. This is one team that I can easily see defying the expectations and creating a lot of noise in the playoffs.

Limp Iskric
GM: Marko Iskric
Record (as of Week 9) 4-5-0

Why they’ll win it:

With names like Three time winner Chris Loat, MVP Candidate Greg Kramer AND MVP Candidate Marianne Perko, this team has super top end talent. These vets more than anything know how to win. Criminally underpriced individuals such as Jon Brandt, Saleh Mohamed and Ronald Ha (and Marko himself) provide strong support for a three headed beast that is comparable to any in the league. Marko currently has both the number one AND number two lady in goal scoring. It’s said you can only put six players on the field at any time, and Marko can field a line-up that can run with the best of them.

Why they won’t:

While Marko’s top six is a master plan in getting superstars and surrounding them with strong support players, the rest of his roster runs a little thin. The bottom end of his roster is flawed with players who either suffer offensively or defensively. Look for Marko’s team to trade point for point in the early goings but struggle to keep up with deeper rosters as they go deeper into the game. Key Players to look out for include: Chris Loat, Greg Kramer, Marianne Perko and Stephanie Schwartz

KISS (Kaity is Super Sassy)
GM: Kaity Williams
Record (as of Week 9): 3-5-1

Why they’ll win it:

There’s a mantra in TPL. You can never have too many handlers. You’ll start with a bunch, and then you’ll trade for a new cutter, and then a shiny defensive girl, and suddenly wait you have no one to pick up the disc and all your cutters are looking at you with sheepish grins on their faces as five people cut deep…..what was I talking about again? Oh right Kaity. This team is chock filled with handlers, all who can make it work from any point on the field. Slag off on defense for a second, and suddenly a break huck will come out with “Alpha Wolf” Julie Dewolf snagging yet another score. This team is anchored by two top 10 guys, Misiu Godfrey and Neil Duchen , both bringing a balanced approach to their game, with near equal assists and goals. Having these two “double threats” makes defending them difficult. To note, neither of these guys were drafted in the first two rounds with Misiu being drafted in the third and Neil in the fourth. These guys have proven their value over the season. Look for the disc “move it move it”. KISS features a sneaky effective lady core with late season pick up Jill Elliot relying on chemistry with long-time teammate Kaity Williams and of course the aforementioned Julie Dewolf, who can explode for 7-12 goals in any given game. Key players include Kaity Williams, Julie Dewolf, Misiu Godfrey, Matt Kishi

Why they won’t:

Kishi, Misiu and Neil represent three top 30 guys on this team. The Final salary cap sat at 3,868,542 and these three guys cost a staggering $1,407,961 between the three of them and combined with Julie Dewolf’s salary, these four players cost Kaity more than 45% of her total cap space. With 10 more players to roster, KISS has to rely on her lower level handlers to pick up the slack. Questions linger, rightly or wrongly if having both of these super expensive top 10 guys is worth it. With both of her star players occupying more of a hybrid role, this team could struggle to score if teams force Misiu and Neil in, while they are comfortable with the disc in the back line, forcing them in will generate a hole in the cutting lanes. This team also struggles with generating turnovers, with the second lowest amount of Ds in the league, with only one player in the top 20 in Ds.

Jarenaked Ladies:
GM: Jarel Villarroya
Record (as of Week 9)- 4-4-1

Why they’ll win it:

Matthew Denton, Hadiya Roderique, Kirk MacRae. Excuse me while I go borrow those Union diaper shorts because I just pooped myself a little in fear. These three veterans of TPL know how to win, especially Denton, who I believe is the all-time great in Championships. Teams are often built around a few great players and Jarel has amassed three of the best. Consistently underpriced (if you can consider being top 50 underpriced) Jarel’s silent (cheap) but deadly trio allows for Jarel to surround himself with a pretty stellar core of players including Jessica Jia, who is quietly (and with a big smile) putting together a very nice season, Jon Jephcott (someone who does a little bit of everything but throw it away), and Noah Goldstein, a fine facilitator who treasures the disc. This team has more top 50 players than any other team in the league by a wide margin. This team by individual stats has the most goals, and the second most second assists of any team in the league. Jarel has won 3 of the last 4 coming into the playoffs, and you got to believe there is some momentum building. Denton, Noah, Jarel throwing to Dee, Kirk, Jess are a fearsome combination, and will wear down any defense thrown up against it. I know I’m tired just thinking about it. Players to look out for include Jessica Jia, Hadiya Roderique, Denton and Kirk Macrae.

Why they won’t:

I mentioned that the Jarenaked Ladies have the most top 50 players in the league, the flip side is that due to parity rules, they have most individuals out of the top 100 as well. While there is some real value in the individuals, the Jarenaked Ladies will struggle when their aces need a rest. This team is top heavy and bottom heavy so will be a team of runs, it’ll just be a question of at the end of the game if they finish on a positive or negative run. If Jarel’s bottom end players struggle and begin turning over the disc or Jarel’s aces get frustrated or tired, be prepared for a longggggggggggg game. If I had a million dollars, I’d bet this team to score a lot but also throw it away….alot.

The Ongoing History of Black Agath
Chapter 10: Retrofitting the IRHIN MAN

We are IrHin Man!

Have we lost our minds?
Are we mean or are we kind?
Can we break at all,
Or will we turn it at eight stalls?
Do we zone or man?
Are these things within our plan?
We'll just huck with care
Hope the receiver will be there.

This week we play Steele
On the great green Monarch field
We will have a good time
Statkeepers heckling, we don't mind

Trade you or keep you?
We just stare at the stats
We're done with trading
We're gonna miss those chats

Now the time is here
IrHin Man will show that we're not dead
Awesome spirit play
You can bite my chocolate head

Kaity brings pizza!
Way better than biting bat's head
Now it's the playoffs
Time to do all the things that we've said

Awesome cleats of speed
Lots of goals are what we need
Running as fast as they can
IrHin Man wins again!

As we head into the TPL postseason, here's an interesting stat (thanks to the phone app, of course): while posting zero drops, Greg Kramer has amassed 358 touches (throws plus goals). Marianne is among the female players who stand out by this metric, with one drop on 155 touches.

Music Lesson #10: We’re following Destin’s lead here and doing actual music facts. Gonna go with a plethora of small fun facts. In 1981 Queen and David Bowie recorded "Under Pressure" during a 24-hour wine and cocaine marathon. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield released an album of songs entirely recorded in space. None of the Beatles could read or write music. And finally 1 in 10,000 people have perfect pitch, the ability to recognize a pitch without any reference. I am not one of these people.

Correct Picks:
Tojo PoWiese Club; Remi Jr Ojo + Carolina Vargas
Tenacious D; Christopher Wang + Helen O’Sullivan
KISS; Puja Ahluwalia + John Hurlbut
Steel Maiden; Stephanie Kimmerle + Jeff Chik
Gosfunkel; Andrew Gosbee + Valerie MacDougall
Carter USM; Stephanie Schwartz + Saleh Mohamed

This week the players went 33 – 44 (43%) against the house (not including cancelled bets)
For the season the players are 376 - 310 (55%) against the house

The TPL Betting Pool aka the Soupcan Memorial Degenerate Player Pool aka The Roadies Cup is back for season X. Is this TPL life, Is this just fantasy, caught in a disc slide, no escape from the pesky D, Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see. I’m just a Cutter, I need no sympathy, because it’s easy grab, easy throw, sky high, layout low, anywhere the handler throws doesn’t really matter to me….to me.

Welcome to week 11 of TPL X. The regular season is behind us. Now all that’s left is the sweet sweet glory of TPL Victory for one team and the bitter bitter agony of defeat for everyone else. We’ll do one last week of player specific sidebets before changing things up. Apologies for any players who I was not able to get into the sidebets, we’ll try to get you in next time. On another note, Chik’s House of Sin will be closing up for the season after this week, but Destin’s Degenerates Den will open up in its place. It has been a pleasure serving all of you degenerate gamblers. Thank you to all who participated in the pool, the volunteers, schedulers, GM’s, and especially to the TPL overlords. See you next season.

Black Agath: IrHin Man (-0.5) Vs Carter USM
Side bet - Most G’s: Hin Tang + Agatha Hodsman (-0.5) or Janet Wan + Daniel Wagner
The top two teams square off first for the easier schedule. It’ll be a tough matchup as these two played each other in week 2. That game ended in a 22-21 score. Now with both of them finishing 1 & 2 we can expect a similar score. The thrilla in manilla’s got nothing on this.

Simon and Gosfunkel (-0.5) Vs Tenacious D and the pick of Destin
Side bet – Most A’s: Anne-Marie Carey + Daniel McKittrick (-0.5) or Stephanie Harper + Tom Brooks
These two teams played to a dirty dirty tie in week 3. They won’t be able to do that this week. Gosfunkel will be looking to bring Tenacious D to the Scarborough fair and then leave them there, with no money, no transportation and scary IT clowns…seriously did you see the new trailer? Pretty good right? Hopefully they don’t end it like they did with the first IT…spoiler alert great movie till they revealed what pennywise was then it became stupid. Wait what were we talking about?

Sweet Darroline (-1.5) Vs Led Zepplam
Side bet – Most 2A’s: Lachlan Holmes + Jessica Chen or Matthew Galloway + Catherine Chao (-0.5)
A juicy week 6 matchup here. Zepplam is looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss last week to end their 3 game win streak. Their journey up the Stairway to Heaven begins anew. Meanwhile Darroline will be looking to Bah Bah Bah Zepplam into the ground, then salting the earth so the Led never grows again. That’s just cold.

Jarnaked Ladies (-1.5) Vs Limp Iskric
Side bet – Most D’s: Jessica Jia + Carson Pun or Mark Virata + Marianne Perko (-0.5)
The most interesting matchup of the week. This is the only game where the teams did not face each other during the regular season. Which seems kind of odd since we have a team that’s all about nudity vs a team that does it all for the nookie. That to me seems like a match made in TPL heaven, thank goodness we get to see it at least once. We expect to see at least one person with no pants on.

Tojo PoWiese Club (-1.5) Vs Reluctantly Nickelback
Side bet – Most G +D’s: Cameron Crockatt + Lydia Dwyer or Emma Seaborn + Allan Tong (-0.5)
Wait…didn’t this happen last week? I’m pretty sure it did cause I was heckling/stat-keeping (poorly) on the sidelines. The final score for that game was pretty lopsided. But maybe Nickleback was just playing possum hoping that they would be able to manipulate the standings and their opponents? That would be pretty crafty of them. Crafty like a Fox. Too bad ReWeise isn’t a fox, but a hound. See what I did there? I’m SMRT…I mean SMART.

KISS Vs Steele Maiden (-0.5)
Side bet – Most A + 2A – TA’s: Julie DeWolf + Colin Mattison or Nathaniel Faries + Danielle Leung (-0.5)
Another week two rematch here to end the night, KISS will be bringing their A game on this night. Expectations are high that they will have full make up, costumes, harnesses, pyrotechnics, and full floating stage. Steele Maiden on the other hand will likely show up like they usually do, half in the bag and none too happy about it.

Welcome to week 12 of TPL X. Last week we saw the demise of KISS, Jarenaked Ladies, Led Zeppelam, and Nicleback. May you all RIP.

Carter USM Vs Steele Maiden (-0.5)
Side bet - Most G’s: Vikki Shimoda (-0.5) or Ben Kirkland
Word around the TPL Peanut Gallery is that Steele Maiden is the dark horse of the playoffs. They have a tough road ahead of them if they’re going to make it all the way, starting with Carter USM. Their women are well matched so I give the edge to Steele based on his male roster.

KISS (-2.5) Vs Jarenaked Ladies
Side bet – Most G’s + A’s: Jennifer Law + Mathew Harder (-0.5) or Laurie Zacour + Michael Rudanycz
Side bet 2 — Will Jarel manage to score even one goal this season or will he remain the goalless wonder?
We saw this same matchup two weeks ago and Kaity was the victor. Rosters are the same. Do the Ladies have it in them to cause an upset?

Tenacious D and the Pick of Destin (-0.5) Vs Tojo PoWiese Club
Side bet – Most 2A’s: Tyler Longo + Dawn Man (-0.5) or Carolina Vargas
Tojo PoWiese come with some super solid defenders in Remi Ojo and Ian (baby-face) Bones. Tenacious D will have to be steady on offence and make use of any turns in order to come out with the win.

Reluctantly Nickleback (-1.5) Vs Led Zeppelam
Side bet – Most D’s: Tyler Curtis or Don Colangelo (-0.5)
Despite a seemingly strong roster, Nickleback hasn’t won a game in 8 weeks. Is it the curse of the name? Is Reluctantly Nickleback living out the band’s history (a decent start with a horrendous fall that will live in infamy)? We think the team has been avoiding Nick’s promise of Nickleback tickets* by losing their way out of the playoff bracket. Now safe in the Consolations, they can play to their full potential.
*Nick promised to take his team to a Nickleback concert if they won the Championship.

Black Agath: Irhin Man (-2.5) Vs Limp Iskrik
Side bet – Most G +D’s: Genevieve Daigle + Daniel Ngai or Taunya Tremblay + Saleh Mohamed (-0.5)
Agathin have had a very steady and impressive run. Marko, although a little hard to watch, has the ability to pull out big wins in high pressure situations. Still, we think the Limp Iskriks have eaten too many cookies this season and will suffer the consequences tonight.

Simon and Gosfunkle (-1.5) Vs Sweet Darroline
Side bet – Most A + 2A – TA’s: Anita Benoit + Kyle Hubbard (-0.5) or Christina Chern + Helen O’Sullivan
Two really strong teams face off in the final slot. We’re giving it to Gosbee because his roster seems to defy the laws of parity. How’d he do it? We like to think he cheated.

Only 2 people bet last week so I decided to save it all for the final week. There will be hundreds of things to bet on. You're not going to believe how many things. Huge things. Small things. Medium things. Tune in Monday to see all the things.

There were betting lines for the finals last season...tally up those bets between the end of finals and the awards?

I guess it is a battle between Max Power and Jon Bon Jovi! Since we are the two dedicated degenerates who bet last week.
Who was the better bettor last week?

You're raising a lot of expectations here...you'd best not disappoint these ravenous degenerates.

I decided to go all out for the final week. Going to calculate the results and announce at the end of the awards presentation. Bet your hearts out! You can respond to as many bets as you'd like.
We will be keeping track of % of correct picks

Get your bets in by Wednesday 6pm

Spreads will be used to handicap the match-ups.
Note A Sharp: "Team A (-1.5) vs Team B" means that Team A is favoured to win by 1.5 points.
Note B Minor: Side bets will count in the results.
Note C Major: Gamblers must make a minimum 35 bets over the course of the season in order to be eligible to win the Soupcan.

Bold bets are free guesses. If you get one right it will count towards your tally. If you get one wrong, it won't.

1. Black Agath: IrHin Man (-1.5) vs. Simon and Gosfunkle
1a. Most A’s: Alyne Azucena + Gabriel Isaac vs. Kristie Ellis + Julian Weinrib (-0.5)

2. Tenacious D and the Pick of Destin (-0.5) vs. Sweet Darreline
2a. Most G’s: Polly Yung + Eric Palmitesta (-0.5) vs Cristina Chern + Timothy Fowler + Leroy Lo

3. Reluctantly Nickleback (-2.5) vs. KISS
3a. Most 2A’s: Emma Seaborn + Andy Milne (-0.5) vs. Julie DeWolf + Misiu Godfrey + Mathew Harder

4. Tojo PoWiese Club (-0.5) vs Steele Maiden
4a. Most D’s: Carolina Vargas + Ian Bone (-0.5) vs. Danielle Leung + Dario Zgrablic + Stephanie Kimmerle
4b. Most layouts - Remi Ojo (-0.5) vs Nathaniel Faries
4c. Who will win the disc flip - Tojo PoWiese or Steele Maiden?
d. Will it land up or down?
e. What time (according to the Monarch clock) will the game start (first pull released)- Over/under 9:04?
f. How many hammers will be thrown - over/under 3?
g. How many turnovers in the last 5 minutes - over/under 5?
h. Will we see a Callihan?

i. How many players will be wearing sleeveless shirts?
j. Who will take the pull for each team? (1/2 point for each correct guess)
k. How many timeouts will be called?
l. What player scores the first goal?
m. What player scores the most goals?
n. What player has the most throwaways?
