FIELDS
The tournament has outgrown Milliken Mills Park. We will play at a number of locations, but all are within 2 miles of Milliken Mills.

Frisbee Central: Milliken Mills Park is between Warden and Kennedy on the south side of 14th Avenue in Markham. There are 5 soccer fields (10 Ultimate fields with some inappropriate lines and soccer goals) and 5 ball diamonds in the park. The simplest directions are to take HWY 401, to HWY 404 north, to Steeles Ave east, to Warden Ave north, to 14th Ave east, to park entrance (on south side just before Mitsubishi building). The park sign is easy to miss, but you should be able to see the sports field light poles a little ways before you reach the park entrance. If you reach Kennedy Ave, you've gone too far. (You can also take Steeles to Kennedy, go north on Kennedy to the McDonalds, and park behind the McDonalds.)

Other fields:

  • Father McGivney High School. NE corner of McCowen and 14th Avenue.
From Frisbee Central: go east along 14th Avenue to McCowen (about 2 KM).
  • Coppard Glen Park. South side of Highglen east of McCowan.
From Frisbee Central: go east along 14th Avenue to McCowen (about 2 KM), continue east to first right, go south to Highglen Ave (first stop sign), go east for 1/2 block, field is on right.
  • Middlefield High School. South side of Highglen east of McCowan.
From Frisbee Central: go east along 14th Avenue to McCowen (about 2 KM), continue east to first right, go south to Highglen Ave (first stop sign), go east for 1-1/2 blocks (past Coppard), school is on right.
  • Markham District High School. South side of Church between Markham Road and Wooten Way.
From Frisbee Central: go north on Kennedy to Hwy 7, then east on Hwy7 to Markham Road (= Hwy 48, about 4K), continue east to Wooten Way (about 1K), go north on Wooten Way to Church, and west on Church for 1/2K.
From Highway 401: go north on Markham Rd (=Hwy 48) to Hwy 7, then east on Hwy 7 to Wooten Way (about 1K), north on Wooten Way to Church, and west on Church for 1/2K.
From Highway 404: go east on Hwy 7 to Markham Rd (=Hwy 48, about 8K), continue east on Hwy 7 to Wooten Way (about 1K), north on Wooten Way to Church, and west on Church for 1/2K.
There are six Ultimate fields here - two in the track, two south of the track, and two behind the school to the south and west.
  • Mintleaf Park. North side of Finchum Road.
From Markham District High School: go east on Church to Wooten Way, go north on Wooten Way until it dead ends at Finchum Road. Park is in front of you on the right.
  • Finchum Park. North side of Finchum Road.
From Markham District High School: go east on Church to Wooten Way, go north on Wooten Way until it dead ends at Finchum Road, go west on Finchum Road to first stop sign (~3 blocks), Park is on the right.
  • Unionville High School. North side of Hwy 7, just west of Warden.
From Hwy 404: go east on Hwy 7 to Town Centre Blvd (~4th light - it's before Warden), north on Town Center Blvd (~300 meters - school is on the right).
  • If we need any other fields, directions will be available at Milliken Mills Park and/or Markham District High School.

Captains Information (revised May 3, 2001).

  • There will be no captain's meeting. All the info you need should be here.

  • All games will be to time rather than points. There are 6 time slots on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. Please stay on schedule and please try to adhere to the following time limits (from WFDF rules):
    • Between Points: After a point is scored, the receiving team should be ready within 60 seconds and the pulling team should pull within 75 seconds.
    • Timeouts: Offense should be setup within 105 seconds of the time out call, defense should check the disc within 15 seconds after the offense is set.
    • Half Time: Receiving team should be ready 4 minutes 45 seconds after the start of half time. Pulling team should pull within 5 minutes of the start of half time.
We may have time keepers for some games. If so, they will blow whistles at the appropriate times: single whistle is 15 second warning for offense, double whistle is limit for offense & 15 second warning for defense, triple whistle is limit for defense.

  • Score Sheets. Each pool will have ONE score sheet (I need one volunteer per pool to collect scores.) PLEASE make sure the game score AND Spirit Scores are recorded for every game.
NOTE: Spirit of the Game is to me the most important part of Ultimate and of life in general. After each game, I would like each team to assign a score from 0 to 5 (decimals allowed) for their opponents. I believe the best way to do this is for the team to stand in a circle, have everyone vote with the fingers of one hand, and then take an approximate average. Spirit rankings are highly subjective. To make them a bit standardized, I would suggest that everyone start with a score of "3" for a team with "average" spirit. The TUC has some guidelines that might help you if you haven't assigned Spirit Scores before - Click here.

  • Saturday games.
Saturday games will be 75 minutes: two 35 minute halves with a five minute break.
There will be one 120 second timeout per team per half.
At the end of the first half, complete the point, then take a 5 minute halftime.
At the end of the game, complete the point. If one team is up by three or more, game is over. If not, add one point to the higher score and play until one team reaches this score. There are no time outs allowed in overtime.

    Times:

Start Game  End of Half  Start 2nd Half  End of Game
    Round 1  09:00 09:35 09:40 10:15

    Round 5 15:15 15:50 15:55 16:40
    Round 6 16:45 17:20 17:25 18:00

Schedule (T1,T2,...,T6 are the six teams in a pool):
    Round 1: T1 vs T3, T2 vs T4
    Round 2: T3 vs T4, T5 vs T6
    Round 3: T1 vs T5, T2 vs T6
    Round 4: T1 vs T2, T4 vs T6
    Round 5: T1 vs T6, T3 vs T5
    Round 6: T2 vs T3, T4 vs T5

    Note: T1 vs T4, T2 vs T5, and T3 ve T6 are never played.

    Tie Break Rules:
    Two team tie break

    • 1. If they played each other, Head-To-Head.
    • 2. If didn't play, point differential for the two:
      i. "closest games" if teams are 4-0 or 0-4 (eg if diffs are +12, +8, +6, +1, we use +6, +1.)
      ii. "closest win/loss" if teams are 3-1, 2-2, or 1-3 (eg if diffs are +6, +3, +1, -4, we take the +1 and -4.)
    • 3. If still tied, point differentials for all games.
    • 4. If still tied, points "for" in two games from 2.
    • 5. If still tied, points "for" in all games.
    • 6. If still tied, flip discs.
    Three team tie break
    • If they all played each other,
      1. Record among the three teams.
      2. Point differentials among three teams.
      3. Points "for" among the three games.
      4. Point differentials in all games.
      5. Points "for" in all games.
      6. Flip two discs.
    • If they didn't all play each other, Label them as X, Y, Z, where X played Y and Z, but Y and Z didn't play. Consider the team W (that didn't play X).
      1. If W is seeded below X,Y,Z, then X wins the tie break.
      2. If W is seeded above X,Y,Z, then X loses the tie break.
      3. After determining where X lies, the tie between Y and Z is broken as in the two team tie break.
Four team tie break - Gimme a break!

  • Dinner at Milliken Mills from 17:00-19:00.

  • Party will be at North Beach again this year (see below). I have already dropped off the "Cups" equipment, so you will be able to start playing whenever.

  • Sunday games.
Most games will be 85 minutes: two 40 minute halves with a five minute break.
Top semis will be 95 minutes: two 45 minute halves with a five minute break.
Top finals will be 110 minutes: to fifty minute halves with a ten minute break.
There will be one 120 second timeout per team per half. (In top semis and finals there will also be one floater.
At the end of the first half, complete the point, then take a 5 minute halftime.
At the end of the game, complete the point. If one team is up by three or more, game is over. If not, add one point (two points in top semis and top finals) to the higher score and play until one team reaches this score. There are no time outs allowed in overtime (in top semis and finals both teams will have exactly one time out in overtime).

  • Foot Blocks. Attempted foot blocks by a marker within five feet of a thrower are illegal (treated like a foul against the marker) unless captains agree otherwise before the game.

  • Pull Rules.
The following pull rules are "non-standard". (They are close to the WFDF rules, but not quite.) I would prefer that teams use these rules throughout the tournament, so that everyone is playing the same way.

    Cardinal rules:
    (1) offense cannot start closer than 20 yards to the pulling team's endzone.
    (2) play CANNOT begin until there is a check.

    Short hand notations:
"self-check" = thrower touches disc to the ground,
"defensive-check" = marker touches the disc in the thrower's possession,
"brick" = point on the playing field 20 yards from the endzone and equidistant from the sidelines,
    "R-" = "receiving team's " (eg "R-goal line" = "receiving team's goal line"),
    "P-" = "pulling team's ".

    The rules:>

    • Pulls that come to a stop in-bounds, even if they rolled out of bounds before stopping, are played from where they stop (self-check).
    • Pulls that come to a stop out-of-bounds, can be played: 1. at the point on the out-of-bounds line closest to where the disc last went out (self-check), or
      2. at the point on the R-goal line closest to where the disc last last went out-of-bounds (self-check), or
      3. at the point equidistant between the two sidelines that is closest to where the disc last went out (defensive-check), or
      4. at the R-brick (defensive-check).
To invoke 3. or 4., the offensive player who will put the disc in play calls "middle" or "brick" and raises one hand over his/her head before picking up the disc. If ANY other offensive player calls "middle" or "brick" before the disc is picked up, then the thrower must do either 3. or 4.
    • If an offensive player catches the pull in-bounds, then play starts from that point (self-check).
    • If an offensive player catches the pull out-of-bounds, then they may play the disc
      7. at the point on the out-of-bounds line closest to where they caught the disc (self-check), or
      8. at the point on the R-goal line (at the cone) closest to where they caught the disc (self-check).
    • If an offensive player touches the disc before it first hits the ground, and the disc subsequently hits the ground (no offensive player catches it), then the first offensive player will get possession of the disc in the location implied by the above rules (defensive-check).
    • When any of the above rules imply that play should start closer than 20 yards from the P-endzone, play will start at the point on the horozontal line 20 yards from the P-endzone closest to where the rule says (defensive-check).
  • Markham-Stouffville Hospital.
From Milliken Mills, Father McGivney HS, Coppard, or Middlefield HS: go east on 14th Avenue to 9th Concession Rd (east of Hwy 48), go north on 9th Concession to Church St (north of Hwy 7).

    - From Markham District HS, Mintleaf Park, Finchum Park: go back to Church Street, go east on Church (~3 blocks).

From Unionville HS: go east on HWY 7 to 9th Concession Rd (east of Hwy 48), go north on 9th Concession for couple blocks.

Party Info
The party will be at North Beach Volleyball Academy (5 indoor sand courts, two cash bars, pool table, ping pong, videos of Saturday's games, Frisbee cups, etc) at 74 Railside Road.

Directions: From Hwy 401 & Hwy 404, go south on Hwy 404 to Lawrence (third exit), go east on Lawrence to second Railside Rd (second light), go south on Railside to North Beach (on right, parking at back).
(Railside Rd is in a "U" shape. First light is also Railside, but second light is easier to get to North Beach.)

You are welcome to head there immediately after the games - no need to shower, you'll be playing VolleyBall and/or Frisbee Cups anyway, and there are showers at North Beach.
