City Strike Is Over!

We’d like to take this moment to thank all of our members for their patience and understanding during the 6 week City strike. It wasn’t easy, but through the hard work of our dedicated managers and convenors, we managed to execute our leagues without canceling any games (well, aside from all the rain!).

A heartfelt thanks to our volunteer convenors Mike & Brenda (Mondays), Vikki & Kaity (Tuesdays), Heather & Nat Wong (Wednesdays), and Darren & Nat Fitzgerald (Thursdays). Also a big thanks to our Summer League Chair James McCully and our Leagues guru Ian Brooks. You guys did a great job!

Scally's Cup – Keep the Nominations Coming!

The 2nd annual Scally’s Cup is an All-Star Challenge (sponsored by Scallywags, of course) that will showcase the top players from TUC’s summer leagues. The event will take place in mid-September, hopefully at BMO Field – we are working hard to finalize the date asap.

Team captains can nominate player(s) of the opposing teams that they play right up until the end of the summer. From this, we’ll create a divisional All-Star team from each League Night for two divisions – competitive and intermediate (recreational team players are eligible for intermediate division!). Captains please keep nominating opposing players when you enter your scores in leaguerunner. Stay tuned for more details!

TUC Annual General Meeting – Sept 22

The TUC AGM, which is the annual meeting of the membership, will take place on Tuesday, September 22, 7pm, at Scallywags (2nd Floor Meeting Rm). All TUC members are invited to attend and all members (with the exception of intro members) have voting rights at this meeting. In our next LAYOUT and on the website we will post our agenda for the meeting, which includes super-fun stuff like finance approval and by-law ratifications. There will also be the opportunity for members to bring concerns or suggestions to the table. Your opinions matter!

Become a TUC Board Member! At the AGM each year we nominate and elect new Board of Directors members. The Board of Directors meets roughly ten times per year and their mission is to help guide the Club in achieving our strategic goals and delivering quality ultimate offerings for the membership. If you are interested in being a part of this great team, email chair@tuc.org and we’ll hopefully see you at the AGM!

Spirit of the Game

TUC is sponsoring a contest to help find a new “Spirit Statement” for our league. We are looking for submissions for a short statement which clearly defines what Spirit of the Game is, and why it is important. This statement will be used to promote spirited play in the league; it will appear on the TUC website, in TUC publications, and be used by TUC players as they help to spread the word. Take this chance to leave your stamp on the league while promoting spirit and winning some free stuff!

Submissions should be shorter than 12 words, and can be submitted directly to spirit@tuc.org. The deadline for entry is September 7, and the winner will be announced (alongside the Scally’s Cup). The winner will receive a $30 gift certificate to the TUC shop, where anyone can pick up some discs, gear, VC apparel, etc.

Stay tuned for further Spirit of the Game updates and announcements in this spot. If you would like to volunteer with the Spirit Committee, have any stories you’d like to share, or questions you’d like answered, please email spirit@tuc.org.

Mark Wong is the July Volunteer of the Month.

Mark Wong is the Volunteer of the Month for July 2009. Mark has been a mainstay in our Clinic Leagues this summer, acting as an onsite leader and key instructor. The Clinic Leagues are very important in welcoming new players to the Club as well as helping beginners with vital skill development and learning the ropes of league play. To commit to several league teams, as well as his touring team, and then still find the time to help with Clinic League on Mondays, says a lot about Mark’s commitment to the game and to our Club.

Thanks Mark!

Are you interested in volunteering for TUC committees or helping out with player development? Contact volunteers@tuc.org.

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

Steam Whistle Spirit Winners – Round 2

TUC continues to regard Spirit as a fundamental guiding concept of Ultimate and a very important part of our leagues. In 2009, TUC will continue to award top spirited teams with prizing courtesy of our friends at Steam Whistle Brewery.

After the second 5 weeks of the summer season, all of the top SOTG teams are eligible, and one winner from each league night was drawn. Each winning team received a case of Steam Whistle beer for their exemplary spirit. The winning teams for the second round of summer 2009 are:

Monday League: Energy
Tuesday League: Alotadisc Now
Wednesday League: Strangers With Candy
Thursday League: Ninjastars

Congrats to our round 2 winners and all of our summer teams for their continued Spirit!
