  SUMMER LEAGUE REMINDERS

Things are rolling along nicely so far with Summer League. Weather-wise we had a GREAT first week and a not-so-great second week. Here are some helpful reminders for the summer:

  • there is no longer a rain line! CHECK THE WEBSITE PLEASE. We will update the TUC website by 3:30pm each game day regarding whether games are on or off. The update will be at the top of the home page either as a banner or written underneath the top banner. If the website isnÂ’t updated, then we havenÂ’t yet made the decision so please be patient and check back after 3:30pm. Games will be played most of the time, so the average rain will not stop games – it is when there is seriously bad weather or soaked fields that we cancel games. We often check with Sunnybrook Park and use them as a gauge because sometimes (ie. week #2) they close the fields. A general rule - when in doubt, go to the field!
  • be sure to CHECK YOUR SCHEDULE AND START TIME each week. Any games on premier fields will likely start at different times (ie. Thursdays at Downsview 6:30 AND 8:30 start times) due to our permits on those fields. Please only be on those fields during the allotted game times and make sure you show up at the right time!
  • for regular 6:30pm grass field games, the time cap is listed as the end time. That is why you might notice different end times for 6:30pm games. Captains make the final call on the field and can agree on time caps.
  • players who are not on team rosters should not be playing, unless they are new players being introduced to their first game or are subbing and have been declared amongst captains. New players can be added to team roster during the summer (before August 1), but they must be registered TUC members and added to the team rosters
  • weÂ’re still looking for a few women to help out our summer league hat teams! If you are a female player interested in picking up games on another night, please let us know. Also, players and teams be sure to check the TUC BBS for postings by your fellow members.
  • TUC offers free pickup on Fridays (Ashtonbee Park @ 6:30pm) and Sundays (Riverdale east @ 2:30pm). Drop on by and join in the fun!.
  • has your team tried the Carbon Flip? Check it out and try it at your next game!
  • PLAY WITH SPIRIT!!! We encourage you to review our Spirit guidelines and remember, top spirited teams have a chance at winning sweet Steam Whistle prizing throughout the summer!

  TUC Clinic League

We have already begun our current 7-week Clinic League which is perfect for players who are new to the game or just want to raise their skills to the next level. There is still an opportunity to join this league for the last 5 weeks. The league runs on Mondays from 6:30 PM to dusk at Caledonia Park (Caledonia and Keele) and it concludes July 13 – you must sign-up first by contacting the TUC office. After that we will be running a second 7-week Clinic League on another day of the week starting in mid-July, dates and location TBA.

At the clinic league you will get expert instructions on improving your skills, basic team concepts, zones (offence & defense), strategies, rules and much more. Each week will provide a clinic on a specific topic for the first hour, which will then be followed by a scrimmage to practice those concepts.

You need to be a TUC Member in order to register for this league and registration cost is $35 for all 7 weeks. Online registration for the second Clinic League will open soon and if you want to join the current league, contact the TUC office.

  Spirit Hat Tournament

Saturday, May 30th marked our second annual Spirit Hat Tournament. With over 100 participants and numerous hard working volunteers, we hosted a day of fun and ultimate that left everyone smiling. Thanks so much to our Spirit mentors, photographers, and volunteers who made this a special day.

The morning consisted of a clinic used to introduce Spirit through games, role playing and discussions. Afterward we split into 8 teams and everyone was given an opportunity to play 4 full games and enjoy a delicious BBQ.

Congratulations to our Spirit MVPs of the tournament who each won Steam Whistle hoodies and to Sarah Brown, who won the tournament Spirit award. She's been awarded a 5 day dog sled trip courtesy of www.borealjourneys.com valued at $3000!

Otto's also created a video - click here to get a glimpse of what the Spirit Hat is all about and check out our Galleries section on the website (left-hand menu) for pics.

  Steam Whistle Boat Bash

On May 30 we also ventured out to Lake Ontario aboard the Obsession III for the Steam Whistle Boat Bash. We had a great turnout and everyone had a great time. Special thanks to our sponsors VC Ultimate and of course Steam Whistle for providing some great prizes for our boat extravaganza.

We had some awesome performers - Meredith McNaughton had a fantastic set, The Handsome Nobodies put on a great show for everyone, and Dave Morris was a terrific DJ.

This night could not have been as amazing as it was without the help of our very dedicated social chairs - Sue Holland and Jamie Dempster. Their dedication and hard work paid off, and we were all able to enjoy a great night on the lake.

Sue Holland
is the May Volunteer of the Month.

As a member of the TUC Social Committee, Sue was a key leader in hosting the Steam Whistle Boat Bash on May 30. A lot of effort went into this event; things like posters, tickets, promotions, sales, logistics, music, and prizingÂ….. and she was a big part of that. The result was our best social event in years and everyone who attended had a blast.

Sue is also a regular volunteer with TUC tournaments and clinics and recently helped with our womenÂ’s tournament in March. She is an active participant in all things TUC and we canÂ’t thank her enough for all of her contributions. Thanks Sue!

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 ScallyÂ’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.
