LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER A SUMMER TEAM

The deadline for TUC Summer Team Registration was extended to TODAY. This is the absolute last day that you can register a team! The team must be registered online and the team fees ($750) must also be paid by Friday. Summer League Individual signup (for those individuals without a summer team) is also closing on Friday.

If you aren’t sure your captain has signed the team up, contact him/her asap to make sure it happens by Friday!

Toronto Juniors Summer League

Do you know any youth looking to play Ultimate this summer? Our Juniors-only Summer League (TJSL) begins Thursday, June 7 and runs every Thursday until August 30. The first two weeks are skill clinics/pickup games and the remaining weeks will be league play. TJSL will take place at Earl Haig Secondary School (near Yonge & Sheppard) and will run from 6:30pm-8:45pm each night. To participate in TJSL you must be a registered TUC Junior Member, 18 years of age (up to December 31) or younger, and you must register online for TJSL. Registration opens May 7.

Visit our Juniors page for more information.

Captain’s Meetings – the Captain’s Meetings will take place the week of May 14-17, at the Sport Alliance Building (here are directions). The meetings will take place in Room in 3B, starting at 7pm sharp and finishing by 8:30pm. All Captains are required to attend this MANDATORY meeting, on the corresponding night of the week that they have registered their team for. If your captain cannot attend, a team representative should attend in his/her place. At the Captain’s meetings the following will take place:

  • Captains will receive a free game disc, courtesy of www.daredevildiscs.com, as well as their permit book and Scallywags Team Meal Discount Cards (50% off TUC team meals)!
  • Captains pick-up membership packages for their teammates (read below)
  • Convenors and GM will discuss Summer League format, upcoming events, SPIRIT, and answer any questions that Captains may have
  • TUC Shop will briefly be open at the conclusion of the meetings for anyone who wishes to make a quick purchase (ie. cones, discs, cleats, apparel)
  • Free pizza and refreshments!
Roster Deadline – May 11 is the deadline to make sure that you have 12 full-time players who have accepted invitations to join your team roster. To be considered a rostered player, they must show as captain, assistant captain or regular player on your roster; substitutes are not included in the count, nor are players who have been invited but not yet responded to the invitation (or who have asked to join an "open" roster team, but haven't yet been accepted). Before players can be invited to join a roster, they must have a paid 2007/8 membership.

If you do not have a minimum of 12 full-time players by the May 11 deadline you run the risk of losing your preferred night and/or initial tiering/ranking as your team will be placed at the bottom of our list.

11th Edition UPA Rules – TUC is now adopting the newly revised 11th Edition UPA Rules. The rules are posted on the website and will also be provided in your packages. Captains and players please familiarize yourself with the new changes from the 10th Edition.

New Pyramid System – for Mondays and Tuesdays Summer League this year, we will be employing a new Pyramid Ladder Scoring System. The system was run very successfully by the Ottawa-Carleton Ultimate Association (OCUA) last summer. Its purpose is to provide closely-matched competitions and allow free team movement up and down a divisional ladder. Our intention is to test-run the system on these two nights and compare its success to that of the current TUC tiering system, which we will still run on Wednesdays and Thursdays. For more information on how the Pyramid Ladder works, read the OCUA description. We welcome all feedback to the League Convenors.

No More Mailings!

For the last 3 years we have sent out membership packages in boxes, but we learned that this process was costly, cumbersome, and extremely time consuming. In 2007, membership packages are available by PICKUP ONLY as the Club can no longer afford to lose valuable time and money with the mailing system. The packages will be in small plastic bags for easy transport. Here’s how you can pick-up your TUC membership package this year (as well as the TUC office during regular business hours – beginning May 14):

Captain’s Meetings, May 14-17:
The Captain for each team attends a MANDATORY meeting on the weeknight that his/her team plays, during the week of May 14-17. Each Captain will be required to grab a bag for each of his/her rostered players on the team list, and then distribute those bags at your next team meeting or game.

TUC Summer Season Kickoff Party:
On Friday, May 25, we are hosting a big party to celebrate the start of our summer season. At the party you can pick-up your TUC membership bag.

TUC Summer Experience, June 16-17:
We are hosting a NEW tournament on June 16-17 at Sunnybrook Park. This tournament will feature a mixed touring team division as well as a TUC Summer Team and Hat team division. Membership packages will be available for pickup.

Mid-Season Tournament, July 21-22:
This weekend tournament at Sunnybrook is free to TUC teams and is an absolute blast! We will make membership packages available at this event.

What happens if you don’t pick up your package?
Packages will be made available to the membership until the Mid-Season Tournament (July 21-22). For any packages that are not picked up at that point, we will donate the SOTG discs to school programs. The exceptions are late summer registrants and Fall League players.

TUC Welcomes New Staffer

We are pleased to welcome our new student intern for the summer season. Jen Krol, who will serve as ‘Events Manager’ for the Club, brings a great background in organizing events in various sports. She will be our lead-hand at upcoming TUC tournaments and we look forward to some great events as a result! Jen can be reached at events@tuc.org

ODSA Seeking Member Council & Board Representation from TUC

As we are now official members of the Ontario Disc Sports Association, we have been asked to provide representation for our Club on several ODSA bodies:

Member Council - This representative would sit on ODSA's council representing your organization. All communication between the two entities would be channeled through this individual. THIS IS NOT A BOARD POSITION, this is strictly representation for your club through the ODSA. Most communication will be through email, some phone calls and one or two yearly conference calls.

Board of Directors - The Board of Director's is made up of appointed senior officials from various disciplines, associations, clubs, leagues and/or organizations. An experienced TUC member would be required to participate in ODSA Board members to participate in long-range discussions and overall guidance of the provincial governing body. As one of the province’s largest Ultimate organizations it is important for our Club to have representation on the ODSA Board.

If you are interested in volunteering for either of these positions, please contact president@tuc.org. You can visit www.ondisc.org for more information.

Sincerly,

The TUC Team

TUC Summer Experience
June 16-17, 2007

We are hosting a NEW tournament on June 16-17 at Sunnybrook Park! This tournament will feature a mixed touring team division as well as a Recreational Division. Registration opens May 16 and spots will be limited to 8 teams and 60 hat team players for the recreational division. Cost to participate for TUC summer teams is $150 per team and cost per hat player (must be a TUC member) is $15. The tournament will run all weekend and each TUC team will be guaranteed a minimum of 4 full games. The usual tournament goodies will be available as well as some great prizing!

Looking to improve your skills and knowledge for the upcoming Ultimate season? The clinics will include instruction from expert touring players and each will have a particular focus that will aid you in your development. Here are our upcoming clinics:

May 5 Outdoor Beginner/Intermediate Co-ed Clinic

this Saturday we will host the 3rd of our pre-season clinic series and the first outdoor clinic of the year. The clinic will be at Riverdale Park East from 12pm-2pm and will concentrate on advanced team play. To participate please register online (FREE to TUC members) by Friday.

May 14 Women’s Beginner/Intermediate Clinic

Beginner/Intermediate clinic, concentrating on cutting/defending, with some additional work on more advanced game play (alternative stacks, zone defense/offense, etc.)

Every Friday and Sunday

Every Sunday from 2:30 – 5:30pm all TUC members are welcome to come on out and play pickup. We will play at Riverdale Park East (or move to Riverdale West if there is too much traffic). Pickup is completely informal and voluntary, but lots of fun.

Also starting June 1, Friday pickup will also be available at Riverdale East throughout the summer, from 6:30pm each night. See you there!

Dan Shalinsky asks:

Hello great Rulemaster:

What is the call when a pick is called but the resulting catch is out-of-bounds? Also, what is the official rule regarding a pick when it doesn't affect play (i.e. the receiver and mark for whom the disk was intended)?

A million thanks great one.

Answer:

UPA 11th Edition Rule XVI.C says:

Continuation Rule: Play stops when the thrower in possession acknowledges that an infraction has been called. If a call is made when the disc is in the air or the thrower is in the act of throwing, or if the thrower fails to acknowledge the call and subsequently attempts a pass, play continues until the outcome of that pass is determined. For the purpose of the continuation rule, an uncontested stall that occurs after another call is treated the same as an incomplete pass.

So since the final out come of the pass was out of bounds the play would end up as a turnover.

If you have a rule you want cleared up right here in the layout email rulemaster@tuc.org.
