Rain Cancellations

It's 4:42pm 5/25 and still TUC has not confirmed whether Thursday games are on or cancelled.

This is in stark contrast to City of Toronto Twitter post @ 1:06pm indicating that most outdoor facilities are (not surprisingly) closed.

Can we please exercise some promptness in updates to TUC Website banner especially when very obvious that playing on current saturated fields would be very destructive? Many of us have to adjust plans that go beyond just ourselves if game cancellations occur.

Thank you.

Thanks Rick, agreed. As well, to complicate things even more, there are fields that say in the permit book NO ACCESS TO THE FIELD ON RAINY DAYS, which also contradicts the TUC message "All games are on". And it does'nt help that the Thursday Night convenor did not reply to an email seeking clarification on this issue since this morning.

TUC head office, please give some thought to stregthening communications around this issue.

Agreed. We faithfully went to field tonight and janitorial staff kicked us off.

I realize much of TUC's operations is volunteer (have convened myself so understand the limits to convener's scope of authority and ability to resolve issues) but TUC employs payroll staff to manage key communications. And every year this remains a constant problem with at least one major communications failure between Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation (or TDSB) and TUC on playable field conditions.

Hey all,

As is the case any time we have a rainy day, we checked the fields status multiple times today and noted that the only closed sites were Sunnybrook Park and Eglinton Flats. These games were all relocated and the captains of the affected teams were all e-mailed as soon as we had word. We received 0 independent notices from private or tdsb/tcdsb staff stating that their fields would be closed due to the weather and as such no follow up communications were sent to teams aside from the banner update stating that games would be ON.

We apologize that your game was unable to be played tonight. The janitor who refused to allow you onto the fields tonight did so without notifying us and as such we could not have reasonably relocated the games. If you could please e-mail me at programs@tuc.org with further details (i.e the name of the field) I will follow up and try to ensure this doesnt happen again.

In the future, should a convenor not respond to an immediate pressing issue, please contact Alex @ memberservices@tuc.org or me @ programs@tuc.org

Sincere apologies once again, we as ultimate players pride ourselves on playing rain or shine but only have access to field statuses as they are posted. Rather than cancel entire nights to be on the safe side, we put faith in the existing systems at place to notify us of cancellations.

In the future whenever there is a question on the status of games, I will make a further effort to communicate using social media. While this may not have helped in this instance (the field still would have been closed and we wouldnt have known), it could help others who are unsure of their games status.

I hope that this response is sufficient, if you require further details just ask away below or by e-mail. Thanks you for bringing this issue to our attention.

Hmmmmm.... so how will this work for our juniors/youth programs? For years I've been telling all parents to look at the green banner on the homepage on rainy days to see if the youth/jrs program will be running or not. Our summer programs started this week, and I gave this same "rain policy" speech to parents twice already this week.

Because I am often not on email during the day, emailing me about a field cancellation or relocation mid-afternoon or later is not helpful because it's likely I won't get the message in time to forward it to all parents, especially parents bringing their kids in from out of town. As a head coach, I function as both convenor and captain for my youth/jrs programs, so I have nowhere to turn to but the web site as a conduit for information. To me it makes much more sense for parents/players to get information on field closures/cancellations directly from the TUC site/office than to pass it through me.

Hey Thomas,

Any juniors cancellations would go directly to the players/parents. We arent taking any of the old ways of notifying players/coaches away. Simply adding new ones to make sure everybody knows what's going on.

Hi Micheal, thanks for your response, appreciated. For clarity, can you fit any information on the Green Banner to indicate fields that you know are closed? Might be helpful, although you're right, you can't control a "rogue janitor"!
