Rule clarification : Pick

Postby johnnytoobeef » Fri Feb 19, 2016 5:50 pm

Hi all,

This is a fairly basic question regarding the Pick rule.

Last night in a game (low-level rec), I was handling the disc and threw a pass to a teammate who caught it. At some point between the release of the disc and my team mate catching it, another team mate ran up from down-field with their defender in tow, cut across the field and their defender called a pick on me for blocking his path to following my team mate.

Did I cause a pick against the defender? My reading of the rule is that a pick occurs when an offensive player moves in such a way as to obstruct the path of a defender guarding another offensive player. With that in mind, it seems like it would not be a pick, as I was stationary at the time.

Hopefully people can explain the rule in this case and advise whether my interpretation is correct/incorrect.

The rule is that "A pick occurs whenever an offensive player moves in a manner that causes a defensive player guarding an offensive player to be obstructed by another player." None of this says that the other player has to be moving. So if you are standing still on O (as the thrower, or in the stack, or just hanging out) and your teammate takes a path that causes their defender to be obstructed by you (that is, to run into you, or to change path to avoid doing so), then it's a pick. In the scenario you described, it sounds like you are playing the role of 'another player' and your teammate is the one who is moving so as to cause a pick.

It does sound like a pick but since the pick didn't affect the catch the disc would stay with the upfield player. (not sure if that was a part of your question but not every pick results in the disc going back to the thrower)
