TPL Season X: For those about to rock, we salute you!
TPL ROX!!!

Here are the GMs for this season: Hin Tang & Agatha Hodsman, Carter Chin, Andrew Gosbee, Jarel Villarroya, Kaity Williams, Baron Lam, Marko Iskric, Nick Hung, Darrel Nantais, Remi Ojo & Laura Wiese, Jeff Steele, and Destin McQuillan.

This is the momentous 10th season for TPL. TPL isn't a snotty nosed kid trying to figure sh%t out anymore. TPL has gone through its growing pains. TPL has spent countless hours in the basement drumming until its hands were bleeding. Shredding on the guitar until its fingers had callouses on top of callouses. And this is the season TPL enters its double digit years with a rock extravaganza unlike any this humble planet has ever witnessed. So far the bands that have been confirmed are:

The Ongoing History of Black Agath

Chapter 1: Formation and early days

Following the break-up of their previous band, Mythology, guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward sought to form a heavy blues rock band so they enlisted bassist, Hin "Geezer Cutter" Tang, and vocalist, Hozzy Hodsbourne, who had previously played together on Premium!! DUUUUDE!!!

A cinema across the street from the band's first practice was showing the 1963 horror film Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff and directed by Mario Bava. While watching people line up to see the film, someone noted that it was strange that people spent so much money to see scary movies.

Making use of the offensive strategy known as "the Devil's Interval", the band's ominous sound and movement pushed it in a darker direction. The band changed its name to Black Agath and made the decision to focus on playing a style that would push the boundaries of Ultimate horror.

The TPL Betting Pool aka the Soupcan Memorial Degenerate Player Pool aka The Roadies Cup is back for season X and boy do we have an axe to grind.

We will be keeping track of % of correct pics throughout the season.

Spreads will be used to handicap the match-ups.
Note A Sharp: "Team A (-1.5) vs Team B" means that Team A is favoured to win by 1.5 points.
Note B Minor: Side bets will count in the results.
Note C Major: Gamblers must make a minimum 35 bets over the course of the season in order to be eligible to win the Soupcan.

Welcome to week 1 of TPL X. The roadies have been slacking off all tour and can’t be bothered to do any actual research this week. We’d like go on strike because of the poor pay, the long hours, the backbreaking labour and the lack of respect, but then we wouldn’t be living the dream!!! The favourites are being picked solely on team names, after all this ain’t vegas it’s TPL (much better than vegas). That’s right GM’s all those awesome picks that you thought you made mean nothing, all that mattered was how well you could make a pun with your name.

A toughy of a matchup here folks. We have a classic song sung by the mercurial Neil Diamond against a band that sang about purchasing the finest Dijon ketchup. However, as we are in Toronto where the Jarnaked Ladies grew up, and we hate the Red Sox who use Sweet Darroline as their 8th inning song, the roadies are picking the Canadian’s for the win.

KISS (Kaity Is Super Sassy) (-1.5) Vs Nick

As of this post Nick has not chosen a team name, the roadies are hoping that he doesn’t cop out and go with William Hung or Nick Jonas. Either way, he still won’t be KISS. KISS is everywhere and we mean EVERYWHERE!!! They have hello kitty merchandise, Scooby-doo cartoons, and have even saved Christmas. The roadies are putting their money on Kaity’s Love Gun.

We remember the days when we all wore our backwards red NY hats and yelled about doing it all for the something, but man did Fred Iskrc fall into the background quickly. He got all power hungry thinking GM of TPL hell yeah!!! Made M&M mad then just kind of went away. Maybe if he just listened to the sounds of silence he would’ve lasted a little longer.

Tenacious D and the pick of Destin (-1.5) Vs Carter the unstoppable sex machine
Side Bet: O/U total points: 42.5
This is a matchup loaded with sexual tension. An unstoppable sex machine vs a band that admits sometime’s you have say “Hey, I’m going to copulate with you in a much less aggressive fashion” (Paraphrased of course). Both captains have picked pretty decent names on this one, but we’ll have to give the nod to the band that also has a major Hollywood movie with Dave Grohl as Satan.

We have classic British rock Vs new Canadian rock. Can the nature of the Remi/Weise experiment stop the war pigs sent by Agatha/HIn? We’re picking Canadian content on this one folks.

Crazy suggestion: at the end of the season, have a TPL All Star Game. Top 16 guys and top 10 girls (as measured by salary) are split up and play in a showdown on the last (or 2nd last) week (before/after the championship game?). Could even be a shortened game, 20 minutes or first to 10 points or somesuch. Just a thought!

The Ongoing History of Black Agath
Chapter 2: First Tour and Back To The Studio

On May 21, 1971 Black Agath visited Toronto, Ontario, Canada as part of their ParHinoid Tour. Opening for them was an up and coming local band named Tojo Powiese Club. The concert was a popular success but it was panned by some critics. One critic in particular, Marko Iskric, was confused by the names of the bands and gave it only one thumbs up. In the end, the ParHinoid Tour was an overwhelming commercial success and gave the band confidence as they went back to the studio to start work on their third album. During the recording of the new album, it was decided that the team didn't need 13 flute polishers so they released Chris Wang and Graham Haines. It was also decided that they needed additional guitar and bass tuners who would be able to consistently downtune those instruments 1 1/2 steps to generate the sound they wanted. The new tuners were Keegan Lee-Newbury and Mathew Harder.

The new album, Reality of Masters, was released in July 1971. Reflecting on this album, Mojo magazine called Reality of Masters, "The sound of a band becoming increasingly comfortable in their studio surroundings." The album would go on to reach multi-platinum in sales.

We’ll be calling Dr Love before we Run to the hills. Steele Maiden will have to make some adjustments after their band leader went down, hopefully only for a short time. While KISS will be coming out in full Pycho circus mode after a tough loss in week one. In a battle of the heavy metal bands, the winner will be showered with rewards and groupies, the loser will be forced to eat the head of a bat.

Sweet Darroline (-1.5) Vs Simon and Gosfunkle
Side bet - Most G-RE’s: Puja Ahluwalia + Benjamin St.Louis (-0.5) or Vincent Poon + Polly Yung
Does this matchup even count as rock? We wouldn’t see either band at Ozfest or edgefest or Woodstock fest. Though I guess Young was at Woodstock with Crosby, Stills and Nash. We’ll add an extra 0.5% if you bet on this correctly and were old enough to see and appreciate Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Hopefully you won’t have to chase those Nickleback or Limp Bizkit loving kids around the field next week.

Didn't really want to support Stephanie though. That hurts a little. Won't be there to heckle her so if someone else could, that would be great. I am afraid she will miss it.
