TUC News

Dear Fellow Members,

TUC Leadership continues to monitor the developments around COVID-19 in Toronto, within Ontario, across Canada, and around the Globe. We continue to be committed to providing you, our fellow members with the latest information.

Federal, provincial and local governments and their respective public health agencies continue to urge us to do our part via social distancing measures, and self-isolation to "plank the curve" and reduce the spread of this virus. Today the city announced that effective immediately, all City-owned parks, sports fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment and Frisbee golf locations are closed to stop the spread of COVID-19.

In addition to these public health measures to mitigate community spread, government agencies are also...

Dear Fellow Members,

TUC Leadership continues to monitor the developments around COVID-19 in Toronto, in Ontario, across Canada, and around the World. We are committed to providing you, our fellow members with the latest information.

The last seventy-two (72) hours, has brought significant change for all of us as we all do our part: social distancing measures, and self-isolation to "flatten the curve" to mitigate the spread of this virus and break the chain of community spread.

To the members of the TUC community who are front line workers - health care professionals, emergency services personnel, grocers, pharmacists, etc. - thank you.

TUC leadership continues to work on plans for our return to play. On Sunday, March 15th, we announced our short-term plan, with a tentative resumption of play on April 5th (The City of Toronto still anticipates a tentative date of April 5th for services to resume).

We've resumed planning for the longer-...

Dear Members,

As we continue to monitor the developments surrounding COVID-19, in Toronto, in Ontario, and across the world, TUC leadership continues to keep up to date with the latest information and remains focused on providing our members with information to protect themselves.

While the public health risk remains low, and COVID-19 is not circulating locally in Toronto, over the last few days, local, provincial and federal agencies have made several recommendations (social distancing measures) to "flatten the curve":

  • Toronto Public Health (TPH) and the Minister of Health recommended closure of licensed childcare facilities, and cancellation of March Break camps.
  • In response to TPH, the City of Toronto has canceled programs, events, and several facilities (including Lamport), with a tentative date of service resumption on 5 April.

On Thursday, March 12th, TUC announced that effective immediately, we...

TUC Leagues Safety Update - Dangerous Plays

November 14, 2019, 5:54 PM

Due to a recent increase in the number of league incidents, we felt it was necessary to revisit the Dangerous Play Rule. Safety for our players needs to be a priority and we must continue to educate our membership.

There are a number of reasons why this is an issue:

  • Players are getting injured, where it not only affects their sporting careers but also their day-to-day life
  • These dangerous plays are affecting the way players view and play against certain teams
  • Some players will only play in certain formats because they are concerned for their safety
  • Other players are leaving our leagues or the sport altogether

League games are generally played according to a slightly modified version of the USAU 11th edition rules. USA Ultimate has recently completed revisions and updates to the Official Rules of Ultimate of which includes the Dangerous Play Rule.

Volunteers of the Month - March & April

May 5, 2019, 12:00 PM

Volunteers of the the Month - March - Jeremy Roedde, Chris Loat, Agatha Hodsman

Jeremy, Chris, and Agatha coordinated both the Fall and Winter Indoor Wednesday Parity Co-ed HAT League, better known as TPL.  In their roles, they are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the league including draft day, weekly stats and trade updates, and the end of season awards.  With so many moving parts and constant changes being made the Parity League is extremely demanding.  These three individuals have done an outstanding job and we certainly need to recognize the commitment to what has become the most popular TUC indoor league.

Jeremy started playing in TUC in 1993 and is still going strong entering his 26th summer season with the league. He has founded and played on many Toronto area touring teams during his nearly 20-year run of consecutive Nationals appearances.  Fun fact: at his peak of insane ultimate scheduling, he once played in 28...

TUC Statement
Re: Dangerous Play Rule Change Pilot Project
January 31st, 2019

It is great to see the community engaging in an active and spirited discussion around the game they are passionate about. This pilot project was introduced as a result of a few factors. Two factors that stand out are safe play and the evolution of the game.

The first factor, safe play, is the recognition that TUC saw a spike in on field injuries with the common element being players colliding and some of...

Dangerous Play Rule Change

January 30, 2019, 1:42 PM

TUC will be implementing a pilot project (in the Thursday Downsview HAT league and the Thursday Monarch Elite league) where the WFDF Dangerous Play rule will replace the USAU Dangerous Play rule. The goal of this change is to provide a safe environment for all TUC players in all games. At the core level, Ultimate is a non-contact sport and this rule embodies this principle of the game. Know up front this change will not be a perfect solution to something that may have happened in one of your past games and it will take time for all players to make an adjustment. How you play the game and communicate with your fellow players is the best way to implement change in your community. As always, play with spirit.

The rule being implemented is the WFDF Dangerous Play Rule 17.1.1
