New Juniors Participation Policy & Revised Juniors Waiver

The Toronto Ultimate Club greatly values its Junior players and works to foster an environment that protects the physical and emotional well-being of players under the age of 19. The Club has developed a new policy that addresses this value: The TUC Juniors Participation Policy.

We ask all Junior-aged players, as well as adult league teams with junior-aged players, to review this document. Note that since Summer League has already begun it would be difficult to enforce on teams with existing Junior players (we don’t want to gouge any rosters). However, this policy will be in full effect from Fall League and onwards. All adult teams with Junior-aged players must adhere to the policy rules and ensure that each Junior player is accounted for by a Responsible Adult.

As well, the TUC 2010 Juniors Waiver has been revised. Any Junior player who has already submitted a waiver is not required to do anything further. However, any Junior player who is new or has yet to submit their waiver MUST SUBMIT THE NEW REVISED VERSION, which can be found here. Thank you for your cooperation!

Summer League Incidents – A Plea from the GM!

Whether it be teams or players that are new to TUC, bad habits that won’t go away, or just this crazy humidity, we experienced a number of significant incidents in July. Several of these incidents involved excessive physical and/or verbal behaviour, some of which took place on the field, and some took place off of the field. As a result a number of sanctions have been issued to teams and/or players. This cannot continue!

The Toronto Ultimate Club prides itself on being respectful, fair, honest, and friendly: in other words playing, as well as treating others, with SPIRIT. This includes your teammates, your opponents, residents in the community, TUC partners, facility staff, and anyone else I’ve missed!

TUC is known as a friendly and respectful Club and that is because of its great members. This is a reputation that we are very proud of, and it is a tradition we wish to maintain. It is unbecoming of a TUC member to not play with Spirit. We ask you to remember this the next time you encounter a conflict on or off the field.

For example, if your opponent is getting physical or verbally aggressive, DO NOT respond by doing the same. Calmly explain your perspective. Be polite and not condescending. If a disagreement can’t be quickly resolved, back to thrower and then discuss it reasonably on the sidelines afterwards. If an individual is still being unreasonable, walk away. After all, Ultimate is supposed to be FUN. You can be competitive and push your physical limitations and have fun, while still being respectful.

Remember, Ultimate is a game of PERSPECTIVES. As much as you believe your perspective is accurate, understand that your opponent may have a different perspective and feel the same way. PLEASE PLAY WITH SPIRIT!

SUMMER LEAGUE PLAYOFF SUB RULES

With Summer League Playoffs just a few months away, please find attached the *new* TUC Summer Playoff Sub Policy, which we will be instituting this September for the TUC Summer Playoffs.

This policy was carefully crafted by the Operations Committee of the TUC Board of Directors and its intention is to balance the need for substitute players with team rosters that are representative of league play. We are hopeful that this policy will encourage participation as well as quell some of the issues we have had with respect to roster disputes. As we employ the policy this September, we will be looking for ways to improve it for the future.

We ask that you be proactive in reviewing & understanding the implications of this Policy for your team - and feel free to review & distribute to your team members.

Note this Policy goes hand-in-hand with our League Playoff Participation Rules. For Summer League Playoffs all participants must be registered TUC members in good standing, be added to the team roster a minimum 2 weeks prior to the start of playoffs, and have played a minimum of 2 full regular season games. We have also reduced the minimum number of regular season games required by a player, in an attempt to include late joiners or injured players who miss the bulk of the season.

Summer League Playoffs are OPTIONAL and available only to TUC Summer League teams. Monday & Tuesday Summer League Playoffs are Saturday, September 11, and Wednesday & Thursday Summer League Playoffs are Saturday, September 18. Both playoff tournaments at Sunnybrook Park.

June Volunteer of the Month – Rick MacDonald

Rick McDonald is our Volunteer of the Month of June 2010. As a new convenor for TUC Summer League on Thursdays, Rick has taken the role with gusto and helped kick off league to a great start. His friendly and frequent communications to team captains have been spot-on and Rick works hard to post games quickly and as fairly as possible. The role of convenor requires a good bit of effort and there has been no shortage here. Rick has been a member of TUC since 2005 and since that time has always been involved in helping out at tournaments and promoting Spirit of the Game.

Thanks Rick!

Support your Club by volunteering, it’s how TUC was born and how it thrives today. Contact volunteers@tuc.org for more information.

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

Great Canadian Ultimate Game - Recap

On Saturday of the midseason tournament, from 4-5pm, TUC participated in the ‘Great Canadian Ultimate Game’, the largest Ultimate game in the nation! Click here for details!

The score received at 4pm from Durham was 127-125 in favour of Boys and Girls Club. Our game took place on Field 1 and after an hour long back and forth battle, the final score at 5pm was 138-138! The final score for entire game was 253-251 in favour of Boys and Girls Club. TUC alone raised just over $400 for the charity event. The total figure raised from the charity event is still being calculated and once that is finalized, 60% of it will go to support the Boys and Girls Cub while the other 40% will support Right to Play. We are still selling commemorative GCUG discs to honour the event and support the donation. Discs are $15 each and can be bought at future TUC tournaments or at the TUC office.

Scallywags & Whistlers

Teams don’t forget after your games to take advantage of our partner restaurant deals. Try to call in advance so that you can reserve a table and so that the staff can prepare for your arrival. Make sure you have a minimum of 8 teammates attending as our partners do not offer these deals to very small groups.

Vote ‘Pedlar’ This Fall!

One of our own is running for City Council this Fall! Jason Pedlar (TUC member since 2006), is running for City Council for the City of Toronto (Ward 2) on October 25, 2010. While he’d be elected to represent Ward 2, should Jason win he would have a voice in the city as a whole. Jason is a big proponent for active healthy living and of course for Ultimate!

Any support to Jason’s campaign would be appreciated, and ideally could help our sport down the road. Please visit Jason’s website at www.votepedlar.com – where you can learn more about his campaign and initiatives. Vote Pedlar on October 25!
