Touring Tryouts

TUC supports a number of touring teams within the community. Touring teams are high level teams, in varying categories (open, womens, co-ed, masters, juniors), that typically host regular practices and travel to tournaments. If you are interested in trying out for a touring team this season you had better act quickly, as touring tryouts are taking place over the next few weekends! We encourage you to view our Touring News page and links as well keep checking the TUC BBS for updates on tryouts.

30 Years of Ultimate in Toronto

2010 represents 30 years of Ultimate Frisbee in Toronto and we are already planning the festivities. On Sunday, September 12 we will host an outdoor celebration event at Sunnybrook Park and on Friday, October 22 we will host an indoor gala event at Steam Whistle Brewery. These dates may seem a long ways away but time flies when you’re playin’ ultimate – bookmark the dates now!

We’re just scratching the surface and there’s a lot more to come – keep checking back to our 30 years of TUC page for more info and updates.

IMPORTANT NEWS

SUMMER LEAGUE REGISTRATION ENDS SOON

The domes have come down and our Spring Leagues are now underway. We’re on the brink of another exciting TUC summer season! All nights for summer league are now close to capacity, but at the moment we’ve still got room on all nights. Sign up now! Spots are first-come first-serve and we will NOT be accepting registrations beyond the deadline of May 7.

Team fees for Summer League will be $850 per team and individual fees (for those who want to register as a solo player on a hat team) are $65 per person. Summer season is 15 guaranteed games, co-ed 7-on-7, games to 17, full field. Summer League will begin the week of May 24 and conclude the week of September 6. Playoffs (optional to summer teams) will be on Sept 11 and 18. For more information visit our Summer Leagues page or revisit our last LAYOUT issue.

Summer Team Captain’s Meeting – ALL Teams on May 19

The Captain’s meeting will again be held Wednesday May 19, at Whistler's Grille, 7pm - 9pm. This meeting is for ALL weeknight teams. Whistler’s Grille is located at 995 Broadview Ave, on the corner of Broadview and Mortimer/Pottery Roads. The meeting will be held UPSTAIRS in the McNeil Room, the stairs are located immediately to the left when you walk in the main door.

There are limited parking spaces (30) for the building; however street parking is FREE after 6pm on most surrounding streets. The venue is also within a 10 minute walk of Broadview Station. Please arrive no later than 7pm!

Each team captain MUST attend the entire meeting or send a team rep that can. Any team who does not send a representative may be penalized – some of your games may be on lesser desired fields if you do not attend the captains meeting! Sending someone to quickly pick up your member packages or asking another team to do it for you does not qualify as attendance! If you are a captain on multiple teams though this is acceptable. Please have someone from YOUR team attend and participate, it is very important that you do so.

There will be appetizers served and the upstairs bar will be open for those who wish to purchase a drink. Captains will pickup their permit books, commemorative TUC 30th Anniversary Discraft Discs for their teammates, and receive a FREE captain’s t-shirt from VC!

Captains don’t forget; please try to have all of your team players on your roster as ‘regular players’ (or captains/coaches) as soon as possible.

Spirit Hat Tournament

All TUC members are invited to the Spirit Hat Tournament on Saturday May 29, at Sunnybrook Park. The Spirit Hat tournament is an ever-evolving tournament that focuses on having fun and reinforcing the Spirit of the Game (SOTG) which is vital to the sport of Ultimate. The event includes a Spirit Clinic session (explanation of SOTG, group discussions, game situation role-playing, etc) and of course some games that incorporate Spirit challenges and unique rules. We’ve also had some extraordinary food and prizing at this event previously and we’ll be looking to do more of the same in 2010.

BOOKMARK THE DATE! Registration for the Spirit Hat Tournament will open soon. The event is FREE to TUC members and $15 per non-TUC member. We encourage all beginners and all teams/players with Spirit ‘concerns’ to attend! Stay tuned for updates.

Coach For a Day Program 2010

If your team is less experienced and is seeking a little sideline help, we can try to assist your team with our 'Coach For a Day' mentor program. A volunteer 'coach' attends one or several of your games and offers some pointers on strategies, skills, and Spirit of the Game. Coaches are experienced league and/or touring players (high competition level players). Because the program is volunteer we can't 'guarantee' a coach at any given time, but we can do our best to help you out this Spring and Summer. Simply email coachforaday@tuc.org and indicate your team, the night and time(s) that you play, and when you are looking to receive some help.

March Volunteer of the Month – Laura Levin

Our volunteer of the month for March is Laura Levin! Laura was a co-convenor for our 2010 Winter Women's League and did an excellent job with team communication and scheduling. Laura also recently volunteered to help transcribe video for our 30th Anniversary documentary, which was both extremely tedious and helpful. Laura has always been happy to bring her great enthusiasm and knowledge of the game out to help, from clinics to coaching to park clean ups.

Laura is a reliable member of the TUC community. Thanks to Laura for her hard work and dedication!

Are you interested in volunteering for TUC committees or helping out with player development? Contact volunteers@tuc.org.

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

Winter League Champs

Congrats to all of our Winter League Champs!

Another milestone season! Thanks very much to our convenors (James, Matt, Nat, Rahil, Darren, Kevin, Hadiya, Laura and Vikki) for all of their hard work.
