Steam Whistle Spirit Winners – Summer League Round 1

TUC continues to regard Spirit as a fundamental guiding concept of Ultimate and a very important part of our leagues. For the 3rd year in a row, TUC will award top spirited teams with prizing courtesy of our friends at Steam Whistle Brewery.

After the first 5 weeks of the summer season, all of the top SOTG teams are eligible, and one winner from each league night is drawn. Each winning team receives a case of Steam Whistle beer for their exemplary spirit! The winning teams are announced on the TUC home page.

Congrats to our Round 1 winners and all of our summer teams for their continued Spirit!

SUMMER LEAGUE PLAYOFF SUB RULES

With Summer League Playoffs just a few months away, please find attached the *new* TUC Summer Playoff Sub Policy, which we will be instituting this September for the TUC Summer Playoffs.

This policy was carefully crafted by the Operations Committee of the TUC Board of Directors and its intention is to balance the need for substitute players with team rosters that are representative of league play. We are hopeful that this policy will encourage participation as well as quell some of the issues we have had with respect to roster disputes. As we employ the policy this September, we will be looking for ways to improve it for the future.

We ask that you be proactive in reviewing & understanding the implications of this Policy for your team - and feel free to review & distribute to your team members.

Note this Policy goes hand-in-hand with our League Playoff Participation Rules. For Summer League Playoffs all participants must be registered TUC members in good standing, be added to the team roster a minimum 2 weeks prior to the start of playoffs, and have played a minimum of 2 full regular season games. We have also reduced the minimum number of regular season games required by a player, in an attempt to include late joiners or injured players who miss the bulk of the season.

Summer League Playoffs are OPTIONAL and available only to TUC Summer League teams. Monday & Tuesday Summer League Playoffs are Saturday, September 11, and Wednesday & Thursday Summer League Playoffs are Saturday, September 18. Both playoff tournaments at Sunnybrook Park.

Toronto Juniors Summer League

TJSL has now begun, but it is still not too late to join! This league is for youth aged 18 and under (recommended ages 15-18). It is co-ed, open to all skill levels, and it focuses on skill development and game play. Players can play with their friends and depending on the skill level of the players, we can adapt the leagues accordingly to balance competition and make it fun.

We host 3 locations and days of the week for TJSL. TJSL West takes place at Buttonwood Park on Tuesdays, TJSL North at Agincourt CI on Wednesdays and TJSL East at Marc Garneau CI on Thursdays. Start time is 6:30pm and runs until 8:30pm each night. We have on site coaches who coordinate skill learning and games.

Cost to participate is FREE so long as you are a registered TUC Junior member with a submitted TUC Junior Waiver (see below). Register online now for your TUC Junior membership as well as for the TJSL. Visit the TUC Juniors page for information.

New Juniors Participation Policy & Revised Juniors Waiver

The Toronto Ultimate Club greatly values its Junior players and works to foster an environment that protects the physical and emotional well-being of players under the age of 19. The Club has developed a new policy that addresses this value: The TUC Juniors Participation Policy.

We ask all Junior-aged players, as well as adult league teams with junior-aged players, to review this document. Note that since Summer League has already begun it would be difficult to enforce on teams with existing Junior players (we don’t want to gouge any rosters). However, this policy will be in full effect from Fall League and onwards. All adult teams with Junior-aged players must adhere to the policy rules and ensure that each Junior player is accounted for by a Responsible Adult.

As well, the TUC 2010 Juniors Waiver has been revised. Any Junior player who has already submitted a waiver is not required to do anything further. However, any Junior player who is new or has yet to submit their waiver MUST SUBMIT THE NEW REVISED VERSION, which can be found here. Thank you for your cooperation!

Clinic League Session #2 for Beginner & Intermediate Players

Have you been looking to take your game to the next level? Or are you new to the game and want to give it a try? Well, TUC has what you’re looking for with its 5 Week Clinic League! In 2010 TUC is offering 2 separate levels of Clinic Leagues, the returning Beginner's Clinic and the all new Intermediate Clinic League.

The TUC Clinic Leagues will run on Monday evenings from 6:30 PM to dusk at Sir Winston Churchill Park. Session #2 begins July 5 and will run on consecutive Mondays for 5 weeks and you will get expert instructions on improving your skills, basic team concepts, zones (offence & defense), strategies, rules and much more. Each week will provide a clinic on a specific topic for the first hour, which will then be followed by a scrimmage to practice those concepts.

You need to be a TUC Member in order to register for this league and registration cost is $25 for all 5 weeks. Signup in our registration section - registration for Session #2 is now OPEN (note if you are having difficulties registering please review our How To Register page).

If you cannot attend the second 5 week clinic, don't worry because our third 5-week session will begin August 9. You can also attend multiple rounds if you wish, although the information covered will be similiar and you would have to pay the additional session fee.

Also, you can certainly participate in our regular 16 week summer league on another night if you wish to do so, and use this clinic league as your 'practice'. Membership and league fees would apply.

June Volunteer of the Month – Rick MacDonald

Rick McDonald is our Volunteer of the Month of June 2010. As a new convenor for TUC Summer League on Thursdays, Rick has taken the role with gusto and helped kick off league to a great start. His friendly and frequent communications to team captains have been spot-on and Rick works hard to post games quickly and as fairly as possible. The role of convenor requires a good bit of effort and there has been no shortage here. Rick has been a member of TUC since 2005 and since that time has always been involved in helping out at tournaments and promoting Spirit of the Game.

Thanks Rick!

Support your Club by volunteering, it’s how TUC was born and how it thrives today. Contact volunteers@tuc.org for more information.

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

TUC Membership Discs

Membership discs were distributed at the Captains Meeting, for all players who were confirmed on their team rosters by May 18. For players joining TUC after May 18, you can pickup your membership disc at the TUC office or upcoming TUC events (like the Mid-Season!).

The TUC membership disc is a commemorative 30th Anniversary Disc, brought to you by Discraft. It features the names of original and ‘old school’ TUC teams, as well as long tenured teams of the past decade. Design by Hilary Leung. TUC members can purchase additional 30th Anniversary Discs for $10 each!
