2020 TUC Volunteer of the Year - Winners and Honourable Mentions

2020 was a challenging year, and our lives impacted in so many ways, including our ability to play and give back to the sport we all love.

TUC is a close-knit community that relies on our volunteers. We are so grateful to have so many beautiful humans willing to give back and grow our sport and club.

And while we were able to take the field at various times and celebrate and recognize our volunteers through our Volunteer of the Month Awards, our winners for the 2020 Volunteer of the Year Award are ALL OUR TUC MEMBERS WHO ARE FRONTLINE WORKERS. From our health care professionals, to emergency services personnel, to grocers, to pharmacists, etc. - thank you for your services! You have gone above and beyond for our city, our province and our country to provide others with the essential services.

The 2021 theme for Black History Month is "The Future is Now," the chance to celebrate and acknowledge the transformative work that Black Canadians and their communities are doing now.

To kick things off, we want to share an article written by Hadiya "Dee" Roderique, a long-time TUC player and volunteer who currently serves on Ultimate Canada's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. In the article published on Sportsnet, she shares her experiences in sport.

In addition to this great article, we will continue to share articles, webinars and events that showcase, empower and celebrate Black History and Black Canadians.

Bell Lets Talk Day 2021

January 28, 2021, 11:08 AM

Today is #BellLetsTalk Day!

The last 10 months have been hard!

Our lives have been impacted in so many ways. Over the last 10 days, we've shared some articles and resources to remind us how and why sport and being active is important. We've shared why folks play sport, the importance of acceptance to drive continued participation, and the resulting benefits of an active lifestyle - physical and mental well being!

It's okay to not be okay!

Now more than ever, mental health matters, and every action counts!

Small actions, from encouraging physical activity and getting outside to recognizing stressors to being there for a loved one, can all go a long way to help to support mental health and strengthen our communities during this difficult time.

Below is a recap of the research articles we have shared about the benefits of sport, how to get more active, and mental health tips for coaches and...

Toronto Ultimate Club Announces Staff Reduction

October 21, 2020, 7:38 PM

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented impact on sport around the world. Over the last six months, TUC was forced to cancel the remainder of the Winter 2020 season and offer reduced Summer and Fall outdoor offerings (first with clinics, and then with small leagues). Also, Fall Indoor and Winter Indoor are anticipated to be run at a reduced capacity (if they even go ahead, given the anticipation of further restrictions). With a vast majority of the organization’s revenues generated through league/program fees, the organization is in a challenging financial situation.

To navigate these financial challenges, TUC has used the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), the Canadian Emergency Business Account (CEBA), the Commercial Rent Assistance Program (CECRA), and has drawn on financial reserves. Many amateur sport organizations across Canada, Ontario and Toronto have similarly been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and while some organizations have received...

TUC Fall Outdoor Programs Cancelled

October 4, 2020, 12:15 PM

Good Morning Athletes, Parents and Coaches,

Over the past 3 days, the TUC staff have been watching press conferences, reading bulletins, and discussing and creating what-ifs plans regarding case numbers and infection rates.

We’ve set up our own evaluation system to determine whether we feel comfortable running, and unfortunately, we have surpassed those thresholds. While the City of Toronto has not banned outdoor sports, we know that Toronto Public Health has ceased contact tracing in light of overwhelming case counts. Toronto's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. DeVilla, has also recommended “as much as possible that we only consider leaving our homes for essential activities.”

In our eyes, running an ultimate program is not a risk we’re willing to take when the public health system is strained, and the health of so many people is on the line.

We’ve also had a number of parents and coaches inform us they would not be able to attend today (while the...

ANNOUNCEMENT: FALL INDOOR REGISTRATION DETAILS

September 16, 2020, 3:47 PM

15 September 2020

We are excited to announce the details of our Fall Indoor League Offerings.

But before we share that information, we wanted to thank those who participated in our latest survey regarding the Fall Indoor Season for their feedback. Based on the feedback, particularly concerning the length of the programs, which indicated you, our membership, preferred the 8-week offering to the shorter 4-week offerings, we have switched gears and will be offering 8-week programs for Fall Indoor!

We also received many questions through our latest survey about indoor spaces and protocols.

We have spoken with our venue providers to discuss their protocols for our use of the space:

  • How many participants are allowed on the field? And who is considered a participant?
  • How are they handling multiple user...

July 23, 2020, 3:22 PM

STAGE 3 OF THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO'S REOPENING FRAMEWORK - WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR TUC?

On Monday, July 13th, 2020, Premier Doug Ford announced that regions of Ontario would begin to enter Stage 3 as of Friday, July 17th, 2020 of the Province of Ontario's Reopening Framework. Further to that, Premier Ford, on Monday, July 20th, 2020, announced that all regions except Toronto, Peel and Windsor-Essex would enter Stage 3 on Friday, July 24th, 2020.

While Toronto remains in Stage 2, we anticipate that we will enter Stage 3 in the coming week(s), and we wanted to share what that means for the Toronto Ultimate Club.

Over the last few weeks, TUC leadership and staff have:

  • Worked and liaised with other Sports Organizations (Ultimate Canada, Ontario Ultimate, OCUA, UGM, and other provincial and local sports organizations) on Return to Play Rule Modifications for Stage 3.

Announcement: Registration is Now Open for Stage 2 Small Group Training Sessions

July 11, 2020, 3:44 PM

We are baa..ginning to slowly and cautiously ramp back up.

It's exciting - but we want to make sure we do this right, and that when we are allowed bigger groups and closer proximity, we know how to do it safely.

Over the next two weeks, we will be running 9 sessions, with TUC staff present at each one.  Registrations are extremely limited in order to fit within the 10 person guidelines, and there will be no scrimmaging or on-person defense played at any of these clinics.

There are 3 types of sessions being offered:

  • Low intensity, which will mostly be throwing, and some skill games.
  • Medium intensity, which will involve offensive cutting and receiving.
  • Parent and Child - Throwing, skills, and some fun challenges desiged for 9 to 13-year olds and a partner adult.

Registrations are open, and each session is a single-event sign-up.

Please note, participants will be required to bring their own clearly marked...
