TUC UPCOMING CLINICS – April 15, 17, & 22

Prep for Outdoors’ Clinics

Ah, yes…the weather’s warming up, we’re not waking up in the dark every morning, and that can mean only one thing…outdoor season is just around the corner! TUC is pleased to offer two clinics in April, designed to get you ready for outdoor play. Moving to a full-size field, and playing in the wind and the elements means that you’ll need to have super solid fundamentals, and knowledge of some game strategies to take advantage of your team’s strengths and compensate for weaknesses. Our ‘Prep for Outdoors’ clinics will get you on the path!

Beginner / Recreational Level – Thursday, April 15th
Location: Lamport Stadium (indoor)
Time: 7pm – 9pm
Cost: $10 per TUC member, $20 per non-TUC member

Intermediate Level – Thursday, April 22nd
Location: Lamport Stadium (indoor)
Time: 7pm – 9pm
Cost: $10 per TUC member, $20 per non-TUC member

Team Clinic – Saturday, April 17th
Location: Sir Winston Churchill Reservoir (outdoor)
Time: 1pm – 3pm
Cost: Free to TUC members, $10 per non-TUC member

Does your team struggle to get in sync? Need some help in learning how to play like a well-oiled machine? Then this clinic is for you! Bring your team down to the field for some expert instruction on team concepts, set plays, rules discussion, and how to play with Spirit of the Game. We will give your team the opportunity to learn some concepts TOGETHER and then try them out on the field. Everyone registers individually but you show up as a team on the day. Don’t worry if you’re just an individual, either – we’ll assign you to a team.

Be Ultimate!

Don’t forget to check out our Be Ultimate! page which details our stewardship in the community and some things that we can do to help keep Toronto greener.

Annual TUC Field Clean-Up Day: Saturday April 17, at Sir Winston Churchill Reservoir
In conjunction with Mayor David Miller’s community makeover program and Earth Day, TUC does its part to help keep our City clean. Each spring we visit a local City park and clean it up, giving back to the community and fostering a clean fields philosophy for our players. In previous years we have visited Flemingdon Park, Cedarvale Park, Rosehill Reservoir, and Riverdale Park. In 2010 we will visit Riverdale Park, another TUC favourite. We are looking for volunteers to join us from 11am-12:30pm at Sir Winston Churchill Reservoir on April 17. Volunteers will receive point credits towards the TUC Shop or their touring teams, plus you are helping a great cause. If you would like to sign-up and volunteer please email volunteers@tuc.org

30 Years of Ultimate in Toronto

2010 represents 30 years of Ultimate Frisbee in Toronto and we are already planning the festivities. On Sunday, September 12 we will host an outdoor celebration event at Sunnybrook Park and on Friday, October 22 we will host an indoor gala event at Steam Whistle Brewery. These dates may seem a long ways away but time flies when you’re playin’ ultimate – bookmark the dates now!

We’re just scratching the surface and there’s a lot more to come – keep checking back to our 30 years of TUC page for more info and updates.

TUC Membership 2010-2011

Your 2010 TUC membership is valid from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011. The regular adult annual fee of $65 is used to cover the Club costs of our professional full-time managers, as well as membership packages and insurance coverage. A portion of the regular membership ($25) is also allocated to our ‘Future Fields Fund’ which will be used to develop existing TUC fields and/or acquire new ones. All players in TUC leagues must first be a valid member of the Toronto Ultimate Club.

TUC also offers an introductory membership for brand-new players or players who have not been with TUC at any point within the last 3 years. If you or someone you know falls into this category, we offer a 2010 membership for only $25! Any adult who was a member of TUC within the past 12 months, in 2008, or in 2007; regardless of the membership you held (intro, pro-rated, regular) you must register for the regular $65 adult membership in 2010.

For more information on TUC membership, types of membership, and its privileges visit the Membership Information page.

*Note that your 2010 TUC membership does not include ODSA membership fees in 2010, however we are continued supporters of our provincial organization. We will renew our grassroots Club membership with Ultimate Canada in 2010 and we will work with the ODSA this year to reach mutually beneficial goals for 2011. If you have any questions regarding our membership with the ODSA and Ultimate Canada please contact president@tuc.org.

TUC Summer League 2010

Summer League will begin the week of May 24 and conclude the week of September 6. Summer Registration begins Monday, March 15 and closes Friday, May 7. Visit our Summer League General Info page and our Summer League Registration page for more details.

New in 2010 - Advance Registration: between March 15-21 you can register your 'returning' team for summer league and guarantee your spot in the division that you played in last year. This feature is only available to TUC teams from 2009 who are returning in 2010. This includes team payment. *Note that the system will only recognize the same individual who registered the team in 2009. Try to have this person register the team between March 15-21, and then have them email admin@tuc.org to advise who the new captain is. We can then switch over the registration to the new captain (within 1-2 business days) and they can complete payment at this juncture. If this is not feasible register early starting March 22. If your team is changing nights you must wait until March 22. We apologize for any inconvenience but we just want to ensure that returning teams get their spot!

After March 21, summer team registration is first-come first-serve and open to all; spots are confirmed with online registration AND PAYMENT. If there are other teams that register and pay before you, we cannot make any promises to you as to when your team would play. If you register, but do not pay your team fee, the same restrictions apply.

Team fees for Summer League will be $850 per team and individual fees (for those who want to register as a solo player on a hat team) are $65 per person. The cost for a game on a per-player basis for the summer is an average of $4 per person. Summer season is 15 guaranteed games, co-ed 7-on-7, games to 17, full field.

The Captain’s meeting will again be held Wednesday May 19, at Whistler's Grille, 7pm - 9pm. This meeting is for ALL weeknight teams. Each team captain MUST attend the entire meeting or send a team rep that can. Any team who does not send a representative may be penalized – some of your games may be on lesser desired fields if you do not attend the captains meeting!

February Volunteer of the Month – Patrick Mooney

Our volunteer of the month for February is Patrick Mooney. Pat was a key volunteer for our Catch the Spirit High School Tournament in late February. Whether it was helping to setup fields, score games and report scores, or even cleaning up field garbage without being asked, Pat was there throughout the event. As a result, the tournament went off without a hitch. Pat will also be taking his great knowledge and commitment for the game into the summer as a Team Canada coach for the World Juniors in Germany. Thanks to Patrick for all his great help!

Are you interested in volunteering for TUC committees or helping out with player development? Contact volunteers@tuc.org.

Each V.O.M. will receive $50 Scally’s Dollars that can be used towards any purchase at Scallywags.

Catch the Spirit Tournament Results

The Toronto Ultimate Club hosted its 6th annual “Catch the Spirit” tournament for high school teams on Thursday February 25 & Friday February 26, 2010. CTS is a co-ed 6-on-6 indoor tourney that promotes Spirit and Ultimate development at the youth level.

2010 CTS A Division Champions - Aurora High School

We boasted 29 teams from 25 schools, including schools from as far away as Barrie and the Kawarthas. Final standings and photos from the tournament are posted on the CTS 2010 results page.

A big thanks to all volunteers who helped out at the tournament, especially those who came on short notice! The tournament was a resounding success and featured some outstanding play and Spirit.

Coach For a Day Program 2010

If your team is less experienced and is seeking a little sideline help, we can try to assist your team with our 'Coach For a Day' mentor program. A volunteer 'coach' attends one or several of your games and offers some pointers on strategies, skills, and Spirit of the Game. Coaches are experienced league and/or touring players (high competition level players). Because the program is volunteer we can't 'guarantee' a coach at any given time, but we can do our best to help you out this Spring and Summer. Simply email coachforaday@tuc.org and indicate your team, the night and time(s) that you play, and when you are looking to receive some help.
